BASEBALL FALLS 10-3 IN SECOND GAME OF SERIES AT #21/26 SOUTHERN MISS

Hattiesburg, Miss. - B.A. Vollmuth went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in and a run scored to lead #21/26 Southern Miss to a 10-3 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

The Golden Eagles, a College World Series participant last season, opened the game with three runs on three hits in the first inning. Justin Diliberto walked and Taylor Walker was hit by a pitch to begin the frame. Vollmuth then singled to right field to drive in Diliberto, but was thrown out trying to advance to second base. Joey Archer followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to knock in Walker. After Mark Ellis walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Isaac Rodriguez singled to right field to plate Ellis.

Southern Miss, which is ranked 21st in this week's Baseball America poll and 26th by both Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, added three more runs on two hits and an error in the second inning. Tyler Koelling and Walker reached on walks around a sac bunt at the beginning of the frame. Vollmuth followed by doubling to right field to drive in Koelling, while Walker and Vollmuth came around to score on a Le Moyne throwing error.

The Golden Eagles tallied one run on a pair of hits in the third inning to take a 7-0 advantage. Koelling singled to right field with one out and proceeded to steal second base. After a strike out, Walker singled through the left side to knock in Koelling.

Le Moyne got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the fifth inning and a single run in the sixth frame. Freshman designated hitter Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) opened the fifth with a single up the middle and moved to second on a walk to redshirt freshman third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). On a double-steal by Speicher and Mahoney, an errant throw by the Southern Miss catcher allowed Speicher to score from third base and Mahoney to advance to third. Junior first baseman Don Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood HS) then grounded out to the shortstop to drive in Mahoney.

In the sixth inning, senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled to left field with one out and advanced to second on a ground out. Speicher then doubled down the left field line to plate Paino.

Southern Miss closed out the scoring in the contest with three runs on three hits in the eighth inning. Diliberto singled up the middle to open the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. Following a pair of outs and a walk to Archer, Ellis blasted a three-run home run to left field.

Junior southpaw Cory Nelson (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) took the loss for the Dolphins after allowing six runs on five hits and four walks in just one and two-thirds innings pitched. Scott Copeland earned his first victory of the season by striking out seven batters over seven innings pitched, while yielding three runs on five hits.

Le Moyne (3-3), which is playing at a College World Series participant for the second consecutive season after visiting Georgia last year, closes out the three-game series with the Golden Eagles on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. EST.
