Evansville, Ind. – Matt Bischoff struck out 11 batters over eight scoreless innings to lead Purdue to a 3-0 victory over the Le Moyne College baseball team in the opening game of the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic on Friday afternoon at Braun Stadium.
The Boilermakers scored the game's only runs on four hits in the seventh inning. Eric Charles, a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American last year, walked to lead off the inning. After a pop out on a bunt attempt, Cameron Perkins tripled to right center to drive in Charles for the only run Purdue would need. Barrett Serrato followed with a single to left field to drive in Perkins. Following a single by Angelo Cianfrocco on a hit-and-run that advanced Serrato to third, Barret Arthur singled to center field to plate Serrato and knock Le Moyne starter Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) out of the game. Senior southpaw Luke Nellis (Fonda, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) came out of the bullpen to induce a pop out and a ground out to end the inning.
Tardiff dropped to 2-2 on the season after yielding three runs on five hits over six and one-third innings pitched, while striking out five batters. Senior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and sophomore shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) each registered two hits on the afternoon for the Dolphins.
Bischoff, who was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2007 and was selected by the New York Mets in the 47th round of the 2008 MLB Draft, earned his second win of the season by scattering five hits over eight innings, while not allowing any walks. Calvin Gunter picked up his first save by striking out three of the four batters he faced in the ninth inning.
Le Moyne (5-8) returns to action at the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic on Saturday afternoon against host Evansville at 4:00 EST.
