Burlington, Vt. – Alison Haigh scored five goals to lead Vermont to a 13-9 win over the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field.
The two teams went back-and-forth over the opening 22 minutes of the contest to deliver a 5-5 tie. Junior Michelle Phillips (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) scored off a pass from freshman Brenna Bauer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) just 1:28 into the game to give the Dolphins an early lead. After Vermont goals by Megan MacDonald and Kaitlyn Johnson, junior Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) knotted the score at two apiece with an unassisted tally at the 20:55 mark.
Samantha Stern and Phillips then traded free-position goals before the Catamounts got goals from Haigh and Stern to take a 5-3 lead halfway through the stanza. The Dolphins responded as junior Mia Valletta (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) and Phillips scored 56 seconds apart to even the score at five apiece with 8:25 left in the half.
Vermont regained the lead with 3:12 remaining as Johnson scored off a feed from Adison Rounds. Haigh closed out the scoring in the half by converting a pair of free-position shots 23 seconds apart in the final minute.
Haigh added another free-position goal just 26 seconds into the second half to give Vermont its largest lead at 9-5.
After neither team scored for almost 14 minutes, the Dolphins scored four goals in a span of 5:29 to pull within one goal. Senior Jackie Lundblad (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) ignited the rally by finishing off a pass from junior Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C. W. Baker). Following a free-position goal by Vermont's Natalie Jones with 13:47 left, Elmer found the back of the net 19 seconds later off a pass from Lundblad. Lundblad then scored off a pass from Bauer at the 12:10 mark to make the score 10-8. Just over two minutes later, Valletta tallied an unassisted goal to pull Le Moyne within one.
Le Moyne had three shots to tie the contest over the next six and one-half minutes, but could not find the back of the net. MacDonald scored consecutive unassisted goals in a span of 1:24 to extend the Vermont lead to 12-9 with 2:15 left. Haigh scored the game's final goal by converting a free-position shot with 40 seconds remaining.
Sophomore Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made 10 saves in the loss for the Dolphins, while Laura Barber stopped four shots in 49:53 of action for the Catamounts and Elise Mazurak turned away three shots after the Dolphins pulled within 10-9.
