West Haven, Conn. – Sophomore catcher Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) lined a two-out, two-run single down the right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the third-seeded Le Moyne College softball team to a 2-0 win over sixth-seeded American International in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference tournament on Friday afternoon at UNH Softball Field.
After being held hitless through the first five innings, the Dolphins registered a pair of hits in the sixth inning. Junior center fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) recorded the first hit of the game for the Dolphins with a lead-off single through the right side. After Daum moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) and AIC starter Kristen Dolan registered a strikeout, seniors Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) and Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Edmondson, a third team all-conference selection, followed with a single down the right field line to plate Daum and Phillips before being thrown out trying to get to second base.
Junior all-conference pitcher Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) struck out three batters over seven innings, while allowing just two hits – a double in the fifth inning and a single in the seventh – to pick up her 15th win of the year. Dolan suffered the loss after yielding two runs on just hits, while striking out seven, over six innings.
Le Moyne (23-18), the two-time defending tournament champion, advances to play second-seeded Southern Connecticut at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
