West Haven, Conn. – Jennifer Lowrey allowed just six hits and struck out five batters to lead fifth-seeded Assumption to a 4-1 win over the third-seeded Le Moyne College softball team on Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference tournament elimination game at UNH Softball Field. With the loss, the Dolphins end the season with a 23-20 record.
They Greyhounds opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third inning. Kara Lyons led off by drawing a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Two batters later, Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year Lauren Medeiros singled to left center to drive in Lyons.
In the fifth, Assumption added a run on one hit. Brenna Morrissey doubled to left field to open the frame and advanced to third on sac bunt. After Medeiros walked, Ashley Bilodeau flied out to right field to knock in Morrissey.
Assumption extended its lead in the sixth with two runs on three hits. Bernadette Fuentes doubled to left field with two outs and came around to score on a single by Lyons. Morrissey followed with a double to right field to plate Lyons.
The Dolphins scratched across one run on two hits in the seventh inning, but could not get any closer. Sophomore shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) opened the frame with a double down the left field line. Senior right fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) followed with a single through the right side to drive in Shea. Lowrey struck the next two batters out and induced a foul out to end the game.
Lowrey, a second team all-conference selection, did not yield a walk in facing just six batters over the minimum in picking up her 15th win of the year. Junior Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) took the loss after giving up four runs on nine hits over seven innings of work, while striking out four batters.
Le Moyne (23-20), which had won the last two conference championships, will not appear in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2001 season.
