WLAX: #5 DOLPHINS CRUISE TO 20-1 WIN AT LEES-MCRAE

Boone, N.C. – Senior Mia Valletta (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) scored four goals to lead the fifth-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team to a 20-1 win over Lees-McRae on Thursday afternoon at Watauga High School.

Valletta opened the scoring with a pair of unassisted goals in the opening two minutes and 33 seconds of the contest. Senior Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) followed with a goal off a pass from sophomore Brenna Bauer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) with 26:10 remaining. Just under five minutes later, Valletta completed her hat trick with another unassisted tally.

Lees-McRae answered back at the 20:04 mark with its only goal of the game as Emily Guenthner finished off a pass from Ellie Psillas.

Over a span of 12:27, the Dolphins tallied five goals to take a 9-1 lead into the intermission. Junior Brittany Brigandi (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/UMass) began the stretch by converting off a pass from Michelle Phillips (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) at the 17:10 mark. Bauer followed with her first of two goals in the stretch off a free-position shot. Bauer then connected with classmate Gabrielle Kamide (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage) and Valletta for a pair of goals 2:41 apart. Bauer capped the streak with 4:43 left in the half with her fourth goal of the year off a feed from Elmer.

The Dolphins, who posted their most lopsided win since a 22-3 victory over Iona on April 9, 2006, pushed their lead to 13-1 with four goals over the opening 7:04 of the second half. Senior Leah Lazarz (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scored 30 second into the half and classmate Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) followed at the 27:49 mark, with sophomore Kelly Condon (Victor, N.Y./Canandaigua) picking up the assist on both goals. Junior Emily Pierson (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Onondaga C.C.) got into the scoring column with 23:53 left off a pass from Lazarz, while junior Stephanie Dussing (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) scored her first of three goals in the half off a feed from senior Katlin Walker (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) 57 seconds later.

After Sophomore Kathryn Barry (Syracuse, N.Y./Onondaga) finished off a pass from Pierson with 18:03 remaining, freshman Kathleen Conese (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scored her first career goal on a free-position shot to give the Dolphins a 15-1 lead.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 18-1 with three goals in a span of just under three minutes. Condon registered the first off a pass from Pierson, Lazarz recorded the second on a free-position shot and Dussing found the back of the net with 9:00 left off a pass from Victoria Nies (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) for the third. Dussing and Conese capped the scoring in the game off passes from Condon and Barzee, respectively.

Junior goalkeeper Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) was required to make just one save (on two shots) in recording her third victory of the season. Taylor Moody turned away 11 shots in the loss for the Bobcats. Le Moyne out-shot its hosts, 44-2, in the contest, won 17 of the 23 draws and caused 29 turnovers, while committing 14.

Le Moyne (3-0), which has won its first three games for the first time in the program's history, returns to action on Saturday at Pfeiffer at 12:00 p.m.
