Farmville, Va. – Redshirt sophomore right-hander Derek Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) struck out 10 in a complete-game five hitter to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a split of a doubleheader at Longwood on Saturday afternoon at Bolding Stadium. The Dolphins fell, 4-3, in the opener and rallied for a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
The Dolphins got on the board first in the opener with a run on one hit and an error in the second inning. Senior right fielder Don Schaaf (Medford, N.Y./Longwood HS) led off the frame by reaching on an error by the first baseman. Following a sac bunt and a pop out, freshman left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) singled to left field to drive in Schaaf.
The Lancers evened the score with a run on two hits in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Brant Jones opened the inning with a single to left. Two batters later, designated hitter Justin Lacy singled down the right field line to move Jones to third. First baseman Robby Newman then reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop to drive in Jones.
Longwood took the lead with two runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Third baseman Alex Owens walked on four pitches to lead off the frame and moved to second on sacrifice bunt. After left fielder Michael Sims singled to left, Jones doubled to right center to knock in Owens and Sims.
The Lancers pushed their lead to 4-1 with a run in the sixth inning without getting a hit. Scott Burkett walked to open the frame, moved to second on a sac bunt, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.
The Dolphins threatened in the eighth, but could not plate the tying run. Junior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) worked a walk to open the inning and came around to score on a double to left center by sophomore second baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi). After sophomore designated hitter/catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) singled to left field to move Wiley to third, sophomore first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop to plate Wiley. Longwood closer Mark Montgomery came out of the bullpen to end the inning with a strikeout.
Junior southpaw Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) took the loss on the mound for the Dolphins after yielding four runs (three earned) on eight hits over eight innings, while striking out eight batters. Stinson led the Dolphins at the plate in the contest with three hits, while Wiese added two hits. Chris Briere picked up the win for the Lancers after striking out three over seven innings, while allowing an unearned run on seven hits.
In the nightcap, Longwood jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings. Shortstop Matt Dickason opened the second by drawing a walk. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Dickason scored with two outs on a single to center by Sims. In the third, right fielder Dustin Sollars doubled down the left field line with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Lacy.
The Dolphins took the lead with four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Schaaf singled to right to open the frame and moved to second with one out on a single to right center by third baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury). Wiese followed with a single to left field to drive in Schaaf. After a fly out and a single by Botsford to load the bases, Stinson was hit by a pitch to force in Speicher with the game-tying run. O'Connor then walked to force Wiese home. Botsford capped the scoring in the inning by crossing the plate on a passed ball.
Le Moyne increased its lead with a run on two hits in the sixth inning. Freshman designated hitter Brendan Maghini (Madison, Conn./The Gunnery School) and Speicher singled with one out to put runners at first and third. Wiese then drove in Maghini with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher.
The Dolphins added an insurance run in the seventh inning to cap the day's scoring. O'Connor worked a walk after falling behind 1-2 in the count with two outs. Following a single up the middle by sophomore shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), Schaaf singled to right field to drive in O'Connor.
Zielinski, who only allowed a hit in four of the seven innings, picked up his third career victory and his first since a 5-0 victory at Canisius on March 31, 2009 – a span of 718 days and seven appearances. Schaaf and Speicher led Le Moyne's nine-hit attack with two hits apiece. Matt Gwaltney suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits over five innings, while recording three strikeouts.
Le Moyne (4-13), which pushed its record to 6-4 against the Lancers in Farmville, closes out the three-game series against Longwood on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
