Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) had four hits and six runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of a doubleheader with Cornell on Tuesday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins cruised to a 19-3 win in the opener and took the nightcap, 5-1.
Cornell opened the scoring in the first game with a run on one hit in the first inning. Center fielder Brian Billigen walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a single up the middle by designated hitter Mickey Brodsky.
The Dolphins answered with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore left fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) led off with a singled up the middle and then stole second base. Junior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) followed with a double to left center to drive in Wiley. Sophomore third baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) then singled through the left side to knock in Botsford and advanced to second on the throw home. After a walk, senior right fielder Don Schaaf (Medford, N.Y./Longwood HS) plated Mahoney with a single through the right side. Two batters later, sophomore second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) singled to right field to drive in sophomore first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico). As Redmond stole second, Schaaf stole home for the final run of the inning.
Le Moyne increased its lead to 13-1 in the fourth with eight runs on six hits and four Cornell errors. After junior catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) started the inning by reaching on an error by the third baseman, Wiley knocked him in with a single to center. Following a pair of outs, Mahoney singled to left to drive in Wiley. Two batters later, Schaaf singled to left to plate Mahoney and move O'Connor to third. After a Cornell pitching change, Stinson singled to left field to drive in O'Connor and Schaaf. Redmond then walked and came around to score on an error by the center fielder as Kalaka singled in Stinson. Wiley then singled to center to knock in Kalaka for the second time in the frame.
The Dolphins added four runs on three hits in the fifth. Mahoney drove in Botsford for the first run with a double to right center. Two batters later, Schaaf had a double to right center to knock in Mahoney. Stinson then had a two-run single through the left side to plate O'Connor and Schaaf.
After Cornell scored twice in the sixth inning on run-scoring singles by Ben Swinford and Chris Burke, the Dolphins closed out the scoring in the game with two runs on two hits. Botsford led off with a single through the left side and crossed the plate on a home run to left field by Mahoney.
Sophomore right-hander Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Ontario/Neil McNeil Catholic) earned his second win of the year after allowing three runs on three hits over five and one-third innings pitched, while striking out one. Mahoney finished the game with four hits, Wiley and Schaaf had three apiece and Botsford and Stinson recorded two hits each. Mike Kazley took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits in the first inning.
In the nightcap, the Big Red scored their only run in the first inning on two hits. Billigen led off with a single through the right side. He then stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out to the second baseman by shortstop Marshall Yanzick.
Le Moyne answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning. Junior shortstop Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) singled to right field with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. He then scored on a ground out to the second baseman by Botsford.
The Dolphins took the lead with four runs on three hits and three Cornell errors in the sixth inning. Wiley opened the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman. Marra and Botsford then each reached on bunt singles to load the bases. O'Connor followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Wiley and move Marra and Botsford up a base. Following an intentional walk to Schaaf to load the bases again, Stinson singled to left field to drive in Marra and Botsford. As Stinson stole second base, Schaaf scored the game's final run by stealing home.
Redshirt sophomore righty Derek Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) improved to 2-3 on the year after striking out five batters over six innings, while yielding just one run on four hits. Houston Hawley suffered the loss after giving up four unearned runs in three innings out of the bullpen.
Le Moyne (11-22), which swept the three-game series with Cornell, returns to the diamond on Thursday at Canisius at 4:00 p.m.
