Lynchburg, Va. – Shortstop Matt Williams led off the bottom of the 12th inning by blasting a walk-off solo home run to give Liberty a 3-2 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Friday night in the second game of the Liberty Tournament at Worthington Stadium.
Liberty got on the scoreboard first with a run in the first inning. Center fielder Ian Parmley led off the frame with a double down the left field line. Right fielder Michael Robertson followed with another double down the left field line to drive in Parmley.
Le Moyne took advantage of a Liberty error in the second inning to even the score at one apiece. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led off by reaching on a throwing error by the third baseman. After advancing to second on a groundout, Mahoney scored on a double down the right field line by sophomore designated hitter Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley).
The Dolphins took the lead with a run on one hit in the top of the fourth inning. Senior right fielder Don Schaaf (Medford, N.Y./Longwood HS) singled to the right side of the infield to open the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. Following a hit batsman and a sacrifice bunt, junior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Schaaf.
The Flames answered back in the bottom of the inning with a run on two hits to knot the score at two. First baseman Austin Taylor singled up the middle with one out and proceeded to steal second. After a groundout, second baseman Zack Haley laid down a bunt single down the third baseline to plate Taylor.
After seven and one-half scoreless innings, Williams launched the first pitch of the frame over the fence in left field for his fifth home run of the season.
Junior Ed Kohout (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence/Genesee C.C.) suffered the loss for the Dolphins after giving up just one run on three hits over four-plus innings pitched, while striking out four batters. Senior righty Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) struck out five over the opening seven innings, while yielding two runs on eight hits. Mark Swanson picked up the win for the Flames after throwing four scoreless innings and striking out a pair of batters.
Le Moyne (14-26), which defeated New Orleans, 9-2, on Friday afternoon in the opening game of the tournament, plays New Orleans on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the fourth game of the tournament.
