Easton, Pa. – Senior right fielder Don Schaaf (Medford, N.Y./Longwood HS) had three hits and three runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader split with Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at Kamine Stadium. Lafayette took the seven-inning opening game, 9-3, while the Dolphins took the nine-inning nightcap, 8-2.
Lafayette opened the game's scoring with five runs through four innings. The Leopards scored once on two hits in the bottom of the third inning. Shortstop Brian Davila led off with a single to left field and moved to second on a ground out. Center fielder Rob Froio followed with a single down the left field line to drive in Davila.
In the fourth inning, Lafayette added four runs on four hits and an error to take a 5-0 lead. Catcher A.J. Miller reached on a throwing error by the pitcher to open the frame and advanced to second on single to right field by first baseman Matt Fenster. After a sacrifice bunt, designated hitter Bobby Fargnoli blasted a three-run homer over the wall in left field. Two batters later, left fielder Andrew Santomauro singled to center, stole second and came around to score on a single through the right side by Froio.
Le Moyne got on the scoreboard in the fifth with two runs on four hits and a Lafayette error. Sophomore second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) and junior catcher Kyle Kalaka (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Freshman left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) followed with a single to center, with Redmond scoring on an error by the center fielder. Third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) then singled through the right side to knock in Kalaka.
Lafayette got one run back in the bottom of the inning off of three hits. With two outs, Fenster singled to left, moved to second on an infield single by second baseman Kevin Casey and scored on a single through the left side by Fargnoli.
The Dolphins pulled within 6-3 in the sixth with a run on two hits. Sophomore designated hitter/catcher Brian Stinson (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) doubled down the left field line with one out and raced home on a single to center by sophomore first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico).
The Leopards closed out the scoring in the contest with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Santomauro and Froio began the frame with consecutive singles to left. Following a sacrifice bunt, right fielder Alex Bechta lifted a sacrifice fly to left to knock in Santomauro. Miller then drilled an 0-2 pitch over the fence in right.
Junior southpaw Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) suffered the loss for the Dolphins after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings pitched. Wiese and Marra led Le Moyne's 10-hit attack with two hits apiece. Zach Fritz went the distance on the mound for the Leopards and struck out six batters to earn the win, while yielding three runs on 10 hits.
In the first inning of the nightcap, the Dolphins scored twice on a pair of hits. Sophomore left fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) drew a walk to open the game and moved to third with two outs on a single to left by sophomore shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). After Mahoney stole second, Schaaf singled to drive in Wiley and Mahoney.
The Leopards answered with a run on two hits in the bottom of the first. Bechta singled down the first baseline with two outs and came around to score on a double to center by Miller.
Lafayette evened the score at two apiece in the third with a run on two hits. Third baseman Scott Kelleher reached on fielder's choice as Froio was retired at second. After moving to second on a groundout, Kelleher scored on a single through the right side by Miller.
The Dolphins regained the lead with six runs on five hits and two Lafayette errors in the top of the fifth inning. Wiley led off with a single to right field and advanced to second on a fielding error by the right fielder. After Marra singled to center to move Wiley to third, junior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled up the middle to drive in Wiley. Following a sac bunt by Mahoney to push Marra to third and Botsford to second, Schaaf plated Marra with a sacrifice fly to right field. Stinson then doubled to right center to drive in Botsford and knock Lafayette starter John Gentile out of the game. After a walk by sophomore designated hitter Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), Redmond doubled to left center to knock in Stinson and Speicher. Freshman first baseman Brendan Maghini (Madison, Conn./The Gunnery School) followed by reaching on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing Redmond to score the final run.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Derek Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) earned his third win of the season after striking out nine batters, the second-highest total of his career, while yielding two runs on six hits over six innings pitched. Junior Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) picked up his second save of the week by tossing the final three innings of the game and striking out a pair of batters. Botsford and Mahoney each had three of Le Moyne's 14 hits, while Marra, Schaaf and Redmond had two hits apiece. John Gentile took the loss for the Leopards after allowing six runs on 10 hits over four and two-thirds innings pitched.
Le Moyne (20-28), which has won seven of its last 10 games, closes out its three-game series with the Leopards on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
