Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior attacker Brenna Bauer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) tallied her fifth goal of the game 1:12 into the second overtime period to give the top-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team an 11-10 win over sixth-ranked New Haven on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Fabian (Clay, N.Y./C.W. Baker) opened the game's scoring 1:23 into the contest by finding the back of the net for the 11th time this season from the right edge of the crease. Just over two minutes later, Alexis Gabbe registered an unassisted goal for the Chargers to knot the score at one. The Dolphins regained the lead at the 24:22 mark as senior attacker Brittany Brigandi (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/UMass) finished off a feed from junior attacker Kelly Condon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) for her 50th goal of the campaign.
The Chargers then scored four times in a span of 6:37 to take a 5-2 advantage. Sarah Magnone started the run with 22:40 left by converting a free-position shot to even the score at two apiece. Ashley Ferrandiz followed 72 seconds later with her 36t goal of the season to give New Haven the lead. Three and one-half minutes later, Ferrandiz fed Kathryn Campbell, who recorded her 22nd goal of the year. Magnone completed the streak by scoring off another free-position shot.
Sophomore attacker Kathleen Conese (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) snapped New Haven streak and her team's 10-minute scoreless drought by scoring off a pass from Condon with 14:18 remaining.
After 13 minutes of scoreless play, Kristina Curry closed out the scoring in the first half with an unassisted goal in an extra-man opportunity.
Bauer started the scoring in the second half by converting a free-position shot just 50 seconds into the stanza. Just under five minutes later, she pulled the Dolphins within 6-5 with an unassisted goal, her 35th tally of the year.
Magnone pushed New Haven's lead back to two by registering her third free-position goal of the game with 18:49 remaining.
The Dolphins reversed the two-goal scoring margin by finding the back of the net four times in a span of seven minutes and 44 seconds. Bauer ignited the run with an unassisted marker with 15:49 left in regulation. Conese tied the score at seven each with 13:28 to go with an unassisted goal. Just six seconds into an extra-man situation off a New Haven yellow card, Condon finished off a feed from junior midfielder Gabrielle Kamide (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage) with 10:19 remaining to give the Dolphins their first lead in over 42 minutes. Bauer extended Le Moyne's lead to 9-7 with 8:05 left with an unassisted goal.
Gabbe scored twice in a stretch of two and one-half minutes to even the score at nine apiece. She pulled the Chargers within 9-8 with a free-position goal with 5:40 to go. In an extra-man opportunity after a Le Moyne yellow card, she registered an unassisted goal with 3:18 left to tie the score.
The Dolphins won the ensuing draw and possessed the ball for nearly two minutes before committing a turnover with just over one minute left. The Chargers put two shots on goal in the final 19 seconds, but senior goalkeeper Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) turned each aside.
After Kamide won the opening draw of the first overtime, Brigandi scored off a free-position shot with 4:55 remaining in the period.
Following alternating turnovers by the two teams, Gabbe drove towards the goal, had the ball knocked away, but caught it out of the air and fired a shot into the back of the net with 59 seconds left to force the second overtime session.
After Brigandi won the opening draw of the second overtime, Bauer ended up with the ball on the left side of the goal. She drove to the cage and slipped the ball past New Haven goalkeeper Maureen Spellman for the "golden goal".
Fucillo finished the game with seven saves, including five in the second half, to earn her 44th career victory. Spellman turned aside 10 shots in the contest, six of which came in the first half.
Le Moyne (12-1, 9-0 NE-10), which clinched a berth in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships with the win, returns to action on Saturday at Franklin Pierce at 11:00 a.m.
