New Haven, Conn. – Sophomore pitcher Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) threw a four-hitter and scored the winning run as the fourth-seeded Le Moyne College softball team rallied for a 2-1 win over top-seeded and #18 nationally-ranked Southern Connecticut State on Friday morning in the fifth game of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at Pelz Field.
After four scoreless innings, during which each team advanced a runner to third base, the Owls pushed across the game's first run in the bottom of the fifth on three hits. After designated player Jessica Rosa led off with a single to right center, catcher Stacy Pouliot doubled to center field to move pinch-runner Sarah Koerner to third. Following a fly out and a fielder's choice which retired Koerner at home, Northeast-10 Player of the Year Brittany Bucko was walked to load the bases. Shortstop Nicole Buch then singled through the left side to drive in Pouliot.
The Dolphins rallied in the top of the seventh for two runs on two hits and a Southern Connecticut error to take the lead. Freshman second baseman Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) led off with a double down the left field line and moved to second as Harrison reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. After Southern Connecticut changed pitchers and senior left fielder Kristin Brown (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, senior first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) pushed the ball to the right side of the infield to drive in Capuano and tie the score at one apiece. Senior third baseman Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) followed with a single to the shortstop to knock in Harrison with the go-ahead run.
After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh inning, Harrison ended the game by striking out Bucko, the conference's batting average (.429) and home run (17) leader.
Harrison, a second team all-conference selection, earned her 12th win in her last 13 starts after striking out seven batters and yielding just four hits. Kelsey Cockrill suffered the loss for the Owls after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits over six-plus innings in the circle. First team all-conference selection Jayme Larson blew the save opportunity by allowing her two inherited runners (Capuano and Harrison) to score.
Le Moyne (28-24), which has won five straight games and 13 of its last 14 contests, advances to the winner's bracket final of the championship on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against seventh-seeded New Haven, an 8-3 winner over third-seeded Assumption.
