Syracuse, N.Y. – Neil Pezzullo tossed a four-hit shutout to lead Pace University to a 5-0 win over the 11th-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division play at Dick Rockwell Field.
The Setters scored twice in the top of the third inning without recording a hit. Shortstop Robert Horn drew a walk on six pitches to open the inning. After Horn moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a ground out, center fielder Patrick Chaputian struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch, which allowed Horn to race home for the game's first run. First baseman Joe Lombardi then struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch, while Chaputian came all the way around to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
Pace, the Southwest Division leader with a 13-2 record, added three runs on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the seventh inning. Right fielder Chris Roemer struck out swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch to open the frame. Second baseman Kyle Turnier then reached on a fielder's choice as Roemer was safe at second on throwing error by the pitcher. After a groundout to the first baseman moved Roemer and Turnier up a base, Lombardi singled up the middle on a drawn in infield to drive in Roemer and Turnier, while taking second on the throw home. Following a ground out, designated hitter James Pjura singled through the right side to plate Lombardi.
Pezzullo struck out eight batters and didn't allow a Dolphin to reach second base until there were two outs in the ninth inning en route to recording his first career shutout. Junior righty Derek Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) took the loss for the Dolphins after yielding five runs (two earned) on six hits over six and two-thirds innings pitched, while striking out nine.
Le Moyne (30-11-1, 15-7-1 NE-10, 10-5 SW), which lost for the first time in 10 home games this season, hosts the Setters in a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch of the opener is slated for 12:00 p.m.
