Manchester, N.H. – Senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) had two hits, drove in the eventual winning run and scored once to lead the #20/21-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team to a 4-1 win over Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon in an elimination game in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at Sullivan Park.
Le Moyne (38-13-1), which tied the program's single-season win record of 38 (set in 2006), faces Franklin Pierce in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The Dolphins need to defeat the Ravens at 11:00 and then in the "if necessary" game afterwards to claim the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA East Regional, while the Ravens only need to defeat the Dolphins once.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first with a run on two hits in the top of the second inning. Junior shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led off with a single to center field, stole second with one out and then took third on a wild pitch. Junior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) followed with a single to right field to knock in Mahoney.
Le Moyne doubled its lead with a run on two hits in the third inning. Junior second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) led off with a single to right field, but was retired at second as senior center fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) reached on a fielder's choice. After Botsford stole second and third, senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) singled up the middle to drive in Botsford.
The Hawks cut their deficit in half in the fourth inning with a run on one hit. Second baseman Richie Manzi singled through the right side to open the frame and moved to second on a walk by first baseman Robert Kelly. After a pair of outs, Manzi scored on a wild pitch.
The Dolphins got the run back in the sixth on a pair of hits. Marra led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a fly out. Sophomore left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) followed with a single up the middle to plate Marra.
After senior righty Erik Lambe (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) came out of the bullpen to get out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth, Le Moyne tacked on a run in the top of the seventh to extend its lead to three. Botsford singled to the shortstop with one out and then stole second. Junior right fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) followed with a single to right center to drive in Botsford.
Junior right-hander Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/U. of Delaware) earned his ninth win of the year after striking out four batters over five and two-thirds innings on the mound, while yielding just the one run on four hits. Lambe did not allow a hit in two and one-third innings, while junior closer Kevin Carroll (Jamesville, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) picked up his ninth save by retiring all three batters he faced. Timothy Cooney suffered the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings.
