Manchester, N.H. – Fifth-seeded Wilmington University scored an unearned run with two outs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the #16 nationally-ranked Le Moyne College baseball team on Thursday afternoon in the second game of the NCAA East Regional at Southern New Hampshire University's Penmen Field.
Le Moyne (40-14-1), the second seed in the regional, falls into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination regional and will face sixth-seeded Dowling, a 3-0 loser to Southern New Hampshire, on Friday at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination game.
Following nine scoreless innings and only one of the first 66 batters reaching third base, Wilmington scored the game's only run in the top of the 10th inning. After senior southpaw Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) retired the first two batters of the inning, first baseman Frank Samluk reached on a fielding error by the second baseman. Left fielder Jordan Johnson, who entered the game in the top of the eighth inning as a pinch-hitter, then singled through the left side to put multiple Wildcats on base for just the second time in the game and for the first time since the fourth inning. Second baseman Brendon Fallers, a defensive replacement in the bottom of the eighth inning, followed with a single to left field to drive in Samluk.
The Dolphins got the tying run on base in the bottom of the 10th on an infield single by senior third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square), but Jordan Oncay induced a pop out to the second baseman to end the game.
Kuzma suffered the loss, just his second of the season, after yielding just five hits and the unearned run in tossing all 10 innings, while striking out three batters. Oncay, the top relief pitcher in the region, improved to 6-0 out of the bullpen after pitching the final one and two-thirds innings, while striking out two. Wilmington starter Jamie Treml struck out six over eight scoreless innings, while allowing just four hits.
