West Haven, Conn. – Sophomore lefty Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) tossed a three-hit shutout as the Le Moyne College baseball team split a pair of 4-0 decisions on Sunday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at the University of New Haven at Frank Vieira Field.
The Dolphins got the only run they would need on two hits in the third inning. Graduate student shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led off the inning with a single through the left side and then moved to second on a single to first base by freshman catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit). After graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) was hit by a pitch, graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Mahoney.
Le Moyne doubled its lead on another sac fly in the fourth inning. Senior third baseman/center fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) opened the frame by drawing a walk. After advancing to third on a single to left center by senior right fielder/first baseman Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico), Wiley scored on a sac fly to left field by senior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury).
The Dolphins took a 3-0 advantage on two hits in the fifth inning. Redmond doubled down the left field line to start the inning and took third on a one-out wild pitch. Following a walk by junior left fielder/right fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell), junior center fielder/left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) singled to left to drive in Redmond.
Le Moyne completed its scoring with a run on two hits in the eighth inning. Mahoney led off with a double down the left field line, took third on a groundout and scored on a single up the middle by Redmond.
Davis struck out 10 batters, while allowing a season-low three hits, in tossing his conference-best fourth straight complete game. The bottom third of the line-up - Mahoney, West and Redmond – each had two of Le Moyne's nine hits. Pat Simone took the loss for the Chargers after giving up three runs and six hits over six innings.
In the nightcap, the Chargers scored their first runs in 22 innings against the Dolphins with two runs on one hit and three Le Moyne errors in the bottom of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Chris DeMorais reached on an error by the shortstop to open the frame and then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher. After a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Cullen, shortstop Nick Nunziato doubled to right center to drive in DeMorais. First baseman Zach Collett then reached on an error by the shortstop and stole second. Second baseman Andrew Johnson followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to center to plate Nunziato.
New Haven added one run on one hit in the sixth inning. Nunziato singled up the middle with two outs and then stole second base. Collett then struck out, but the third strike was wild, which allowed Nunziato to come around and score.
The Chargers finished off the day's scoring with a run on two hits in the seventh inning. Center fielder Brendan O'Reilly singled to left field with two outs and then advanced to third on a single through the left side by catcher Joe Romanelli. O'Reilly then scored on a double-steal with Romanelli.
Senior righty Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose HS/Delaware) suffered the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits over seven innings pitched, while striking out seven. John Melville earned the win for the Chargers after pitching seven and one-third scoreless innings, while striking out eight batters and allowing just three hits. Jason Lewicki earned the save by recording the final five outs.
Le Moyne (12-18, 6-8 NE-10, 4-4 SW) returns to the diamond on Tuesday at The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m. The game is the 17th contest in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions, which the Golden Knights currently lead 6.0-5.5. A Saint Rose victory clinches the "Upstate Challenge" for the Golden Knights for the second straight year, while a Le Moyne win ties the baseball series at one apiece, with the baseball point then decided on April 30th in Syracuse.
