BASEBALL EXTENDS SHUTOUT STREAK TO PROGRAM-RECORD 40.2 INNINGS WITH 4-0 WIN OVER SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior righty Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose HS/Delaware) tossed a three-hit shutout as the Le Moyne College baseball team recorded a 4-0 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins have posted four straight shutouts (for the first time since 1985) and have not allowed a run in 40 and two-thirds innings, the longest stretch in the program's history.

After six scoreless innings to start the game, the Dolphins scored three runs on three hits and a Southern Connecticut State error in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) doubled to left field to open the frame and then senior third baseman Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) drew a walk. After senior first baseman Paul Speicher (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman on a sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases, graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) singled off the outstretched arm of the pitcher to drive in O'Connor. Following a strikeout, graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) fouled out down the left field line to knock in Wiley. Junior center fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) then pulled a single through the right side to plate Speicher.

Le Moyne tacked on an insurance run on two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. Graduate student shortstop Ryan Mahoney (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led off the frame with a single through the left side, stole second base and then took third on a wild pitch. After a pair of outs around a pitching change, Speicher singled up the middle to drive in Mahoney.

Cannon struck out nine batters, while yielding just three hits, to record his fourth complete game of the season and the fourth shutout of his career. Steve Landell took the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits over seven innings.

Le Moyne (17-19, 10-8 NE-10, 8-4 SW), which shut out an opponent in a three-game series for the first time, returns to action on Wednesday at American International. The Dolphins will resume their April 10th game that was halted (which Le Moyne leads 3-0 in the top of the fifth) at 1:30 p.m. and then play the regularly scheduled contest with the Yellow Jackets afterwards.
