BASEBALL EDGES PACE, 1-0, IN SOUTHWEST DIVISION PITCHER'S DUEL

Pleasantville, N.Y. – Junior left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) drove in the winning run and senior right Casey Cannon (Manasquan, N.J./Saint Rose/Delaware) tossed his second straight shutout to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 1-0 win over Pace University on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Finnerty Field.

After six scoreless innings, during which the Dolphins advanced three runners to second base and one runner to third base and the Setters advanced just one runner past first base, Le Moyne scored the game's only run on two hits in the top of the seventh inning. Senior center fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) singled to left field with two outs and then stole second base. Wiese followed with a double to left center to drive in Wiley.

The Setters got a runner to third base in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, but Cannon induced an inning-ending groundout to the shortstop. Pace got a single from left fielder Charlie Galasso with two outs in the ninth and then left fielder James Pjura drew a walk, but Martineson flied out to Wiley to end the game.

Cannon, who has posted back-to-back shutouts for the second time in his career, improved to 3-4 on the season after striking out four batters, while scattering four hits and issuing four walks. Wiese and junior right fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) each recorded two of Le Moyne's eight hits. Michael Tamburino was the tough-luck loser for the Setters after giving up the one run on eight hits over nine innings, while striking out four batters.

Le Moyne (19-22, 12-11 NE-10, 10-7 SW), which sits in third place in the Southwest Division (two games behind co-leaders Pace and New Haven) with four games to play, returns home to face The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the contest will claim the year-long "Upstate Challenge" for their institution.
