Waltham, Mass – Designated hitter Bryan Rocha drove in the winning run in both games as Bentley University swept the Le Moyne College baseball team in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field. The Falcons won the opener, 2-1, and posted a 4-3 win in 13 innings in the nightcap.
After four scoreless innings to start the opening game, the Falcons scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Catcher Kevin Korwek and shortstop Will Brennan opened the frame with back-to-back singles to left field. After each runner moved up a base on a wild pitch, third baseman Nate Witkowski singled to right field to drive in Korwek. Rocha then singled to left field to plate Brennan with the eventual game-winning run.
Le Moyne cut its deficit in half in the top of the sixth on two hits. Senior third baseman/center fielder Zack Wiley (Toluca Woods, Calif./Crespi) led off with a single to left field and then stole second base with one out. Graduate student designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) followed with a single to left field on a 2-2 pitch to drive in Wiley.
Sophomore southpaw Jon Dunn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss after yielding two runs on five hits over five innings, while striking out six batters. JP Ashline went the distance for the Falcons, striking out four batters around seven hits to earn the victory.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. In the second inning, Le Moyne scored its run off three hits. Senior right fielder Kody O'Connor (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) led off the frame by drawing a walk. After a fly out, freshman catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and freshman shortstop Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases. Graduate student second baseman Vincent Redmond (Ithaca, N.Y./Lansing/Garrett College) then singled to right field to drive in O'Connor.
In the third inning, the Dolphins pushed its lead to two on a pair of hits. Wiley singled to center field with one out and raced around to score on a double to left field by O'Connor.
Le Moyne took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on two hits. Charbonneau led off the frame with a single to the third baseman and moved to second on a groundout. After a fly out and a hit batsman, Ciraco singled through the left side to drive in Charbonneau.
The Falcons responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits and a Le Moyne error. Right fielder Tom Nagy drew a walk to open the frame, moved to second on a single to left center by Korwek and then took third on a wild pitch. After Brennan walked to load the bases, Witkowski doubled to left field to clear the bases and tie the score.
After eight scoreless innings, the Falcons scored the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning without getting a hit. Korwek drew a walk to open the inning, but was replaced at first base as Brennan reached on a fielder's choice. After Brennan stole second and then stole third as Witkowski walked, Rocha lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Brennan.
Freshman Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) took the loss on the mound after allowing one run over three and two-thirds innings pitched, while striking out two batters and not giving up a hit. Wiley, West, Charbonneau, Redmond, junior left fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and freshman first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) each recorded two of Le Moyne's 15 hits.
Connor Root earned the win for the Falcons after tossing seven scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while striking out eight batters and yielding four hits. Korwek and Brennan each had two of Bentley's six hits.
Le Moyne (10-17, 4-7 NE-10), which dropped to 5-8 on the year in one-run games, including four straight losses, returns home to face American International College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
