Pleasantville, N.Y. – Four Dolphins scored in double figures as the Le Moyne College women's basketball team held on for a 69-67 win over Pace University on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Senior guard
Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) led the Dolphins offensively in the victory with 21 points, 15 of which came in the first half, while 12 of her 21 came from the foul line. Junior guard
Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View) tallied 11 points, five rebounds (four offensive) and two steals. Senior forwards
Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) and
Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) each scored 10 points, while Greer added six rebounds and three steals and McMahon posted five rebounds. Senior guard
Maddie Hahesy (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored four points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out a career-high nine assists, while not committing a turnover in 38 minutes of action.
Yuni Sher led the Setters with 18 points, 12 of which she scored in the second half, while adding five rebounds. Gabriella Rubin registered 14 points, including nine after halftime, four rebounds and three assists.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first five points on a lay-up by McMahon and a three-pointer from the right wing by Andrade just over two minutes into the contest.
After Greer nailed a three-pointer for a 12-8 Le Moyne lead, the Setters registered seven straight points for their largest lead of the game. Rubin made a three-pointer, Geena Rosalbo followed with a lay-up for the lead and Sher capped the spurt with a lay-up.
Le Moyne responded with 11 consecutive points to regain the lead. Marple started the run with four straight free throws, junior forward
Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) made back-to-back lay-ups and then Greer buried a three-pointer.
Following a 6-2 spurt by Pace to get within 25-21 with 4:15 left in the first half, the Dolphins rattled off the next 13 points. Marple made a lay-up and two foul shots, Brown converted a fast-break lay-up, Marple made another lay-up, Hahesy knocked down a jumper and then Marple capped the outburst with a three-pointer with 45 seconds left.
Jaclyn Oskam made two foul shots with 1.5 seconds remaining to get the Setters within 38-23 at halftime.
Andrade scored the first five points of the second half to give the Dolphins their biggest lead of the game. She started the half with a traditional three-point play after stealing the ball and followed that up with another lay-up.
The Setters countered with a 9-2 run to get within 13 with 16:28 left. Rachel Dortch had five of the points, while Rubin and Rosalbo each had two.
Le Moyne extended its lead back to 18 with 14:18 left on a three-pointer by junior guard
Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wisc./Sheboygan North) and a jumper by Hahesy.
Pace responded with an 11-4 streak over 4:24 to get within 11. After four different setters scored two points each, Oskam nailed a three-pointer from the left wing with 8:27 to go.
The Dolphins had one last push with nine of the next 13 points to regain a 16-point lead with just over five minutes left. McMahon had four of the points, Marple made two free throws and then Greer nailed a three-pointer.
The Setters answered back with 20 of the final 26 points of the game. Sher (6) and Margo Hackett (4) combined for 10 points in three minutes to get Pace within 65-57 with 1:38 left. After a free throw by Andrade, Rubin buried a three-pointer to make it a six-point game with 1:16 left. Following two free throws by Andrade around a missed Pace shot, Sher converted a lay-up with 28 seconds left. The Dolphins turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass and Hackett followed with a lay-up to make it 68-64 with 20 seconds left.
Greer pushed Le Moyne's lead to five with 18 seconds left, but Rosalbo answered with a three-pointer with just over three seconds left to make it a one possession game. The Dolphins missed two free throws with 2.6 seconds left, but Andrade got the rebound on the second miss and the clock ran out.
Le Moyne (6-2, 2-2 NE-10), which has two wins in Pleasantville in the last nine and one-half months after dropping the previous 10 meetings, closes out the league portion of its 2014 games on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University at 12:00 p.m.
