SOFTBALL TOPS NEW HAVEN, 5-2, FALLS TO ADELPHI, 7-3, IN 8 INNINGS

West Haven, Conn. - Sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) scored a pair of runs to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 5-2 come-from-behind win over the University of New Haven on Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at the UNH Softball Field. Later in the day, the Dolphins rallied in the seventh inning to force extras before falling to Adelphi University, 7-3, in eight innings.

The Dolphins started the scoring against New Haven with one run on one hit in the second inning. Reynolds led off the frame with a single to the third baseman and then stole second base. After moving to third on a bunt, Reynolds scored on a sacrifice fly to left by senior designated player Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled).

The Chargers evened the score at one apiece in the bottom of the third on one hit and two Le Moyne errors. Left fielder Jen Palase reached on a throwing error by the third baseman to open the inning. Designated player/pitcher Victoria Cabral then singled to right field and took second on an error by the right fielder, which allowed Palase to come around and score.

New Haven took the lead in the fifth inning on a one-out, solo home run to left field.

The Dolphins answered back with four runs on three hits and three New Haven errors to regain the lead. Sophomore first baseman Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) led off with a single down the right field line to force a New Haven pitching change. After freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) reached on a bunt single in front of the plate, senior pinch-runner Erin Batson (Poland, N.Y./Poland) took third on a throwing error by the catcher. Following a pair of outs around a bases-loading walk by freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park), Reynolds reached second on a throwing error by the pitcher, which allowed Batson to score the tying run, Case to score the go-ahead run and Riley add an insurance run. After a single by junior catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), Utley reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, which allowed Reynolds to score Le Moyne's fifth run.

Senior southpaw Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) struck out seven batters to register her sixth straight victory, while yielding two runs (one earned) on four hits. Cabral suffered the loss after giving up three unearned runs over two innings out of the bullpen.

Against Adelphi, the Dolphins struck first with one run on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. Following a one-out single up the middle by Capuano, Cawley doubled to right field with two outs to drive in Capuano.

The Panthers answered back in the top of the third with one run on two hits. After a single to right field with one out by center fielder Jaclyn Binstock and an intentional walk to third baseman Victoria Wink, who homered three times in Thursday's doubleheader in Syracuse, designated player/pitcher Katie Andrews singled to knock in Binstock.

Adelphi took the lead on one hit in the fifth inning. Following a one-out intentional walk to Wink, Andrews doubled to right field to plate Wink.

The Panthers added one run on one hit in the top of the seventh. Binstock led off with a single through the left side and then Wink and Andrews were intentionally walked to load the bases without any outs. Left fielder Niki Barbato followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Binstock. Harrison got out of the jam by inducing a foul out and a groundout.

Le Moyne forced extra innings by scoring twice on two hits in the bottom of the seventh. Capuano led off with a single to left field and then Utley was hit by a pitch. Following a pitching change, pinch-runner Batson and Capuano moved up a base on a groundout. Freshman pinch-hitter Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) then grounded out to the shortstop to drive in Capuano. Batson then raced home on a wild pitch to tie the game at three. Case followed with a single up the middle to extend her streak of reaching base to 28 consecutive games, but was left stranded at first.

Adelphi regained the lead in the top of the eighth with four runs on four hits and a Le Moyne error. Right fielder Courtney Sullivan opened the frame with a single down the left field line and then advanced to third as second baseman Christina Palmenteri reached on a throwing error by the catcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Shortstop Danielle Cutuli followed with a groundout to drive in Sullivan with the eventual game-winning run. Following a single to right field by Binstock and the fifth intentional walk of the game by Wink to load the bases, Andrews singled up the middle to drive in Palmenteri and Binstock. After a line out, first baseman Jordan Catalano singled down the right field line to plate Wink.

The Dolphins put two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth, but Andrews worked out of the jam to end the game.

Harrison suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits and seven walks (six intentional) over eight innings, while striking out three. Riley, sophomore third baseman Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) and Capuano each had two of Le Moyne's eight hits. After blowing the save opportunity in the seventh, Andrews earned her 11th win of the season.

Le Moyne (20-12, 11-5 NE-10, 8-4 SW), which went 7-3 in its 10-game stretch over a span of six days, returns to action on Friday with a Southwest Division doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State University at 11:00 a.m.
