Garden City, N.Y. – Sophomores Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) each had four hits and scored four runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 21-8 victory over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Saturday afternoon at Bonomo Memorial Field.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the top of the first inning on four hits and two Adelphi errors. Following a one-out single to left by sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), Swetman doubled to left center to knock in Charbonneau. After a groundout, West singled to left field to drive in Swetman. Following a single through the left side by senior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell), freshman center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) reached on an error by the first baseman, which allowed West to score. Reynolds then scored on a failed pickoff attempt. DiNorcia picked up Le Moyne's final run of the inning as freshman catcher Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) reached on an error by the left fielder.
Adelphi cut into its deficit with three runs on two hits and one Le Moyne error in the bottom of the second inning. Catcher Rich Cambria led off with a walk and advanced to second on a one-out single through the right side by shortstop Michael Stack. Center fielder Cliff Brantley then doubled to right field to knock in Cambria. Designated hitter Donato Signore followed by reaching on an error by the first baseman, which allowed Stack to score. Brantley then crossed the plate on a groundout by third baseman Richard Mejia.
Le Moyne got one of the runs back in the top of the third on one hit and an Adelphi error. Reynolds walked with one out and came around to score on an error by the right fielder as Buroni singled down the right field line with two outs.
The Dolphins extended their lead to 8-3 with a pair of runs on one hit and an Adelphi error in the fourth inning. Swetman led off with a single to center and then advanced to second on an error by the second baseman as West reached on a fielder's choice with one out. After Swetman stole third, he scored as Reynolds reached on a fielder's choice and West advanced to third on an error by the shortstop. West then scored as DiNorcia reached on a fielder's choice.
Le Moyne scored four times in the sixth inning on four hits. Swetman singled up the middle to open the frame and then West and Reynolds singled with one out to load the bases. DiNorcia followed with a triple to right field to drive in Swetman, West and Reynolds. DiNorcia was then sent home on a balk.
The Panthers ended Le Moyne's 7-0 run with a run in the sixth without getting a hit. Cambria walked to open the frame, took second on a groundout and then scored as Stack reached on an error by the first baseman.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 14-4 with a pair of runs in the seventh on two hits. Following a walk by junior right fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) and a double to center by Charbonneau to open the inning, Swetman lifted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Mathers. After an out, West singled up the middle to knock in Charbonneau.
Le Moyne exploded for seven runs on six hits in the top of the eighth. After the Dolphins loaded the bases on singles by Buroni and junior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) and a walk by Mathers, Charbonneau singled to right field to drive in Buroni and Nagelsmith. Following a single up the middle by Swetman to load the bases again, sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) was hit by a pitch to force in Mathers. West and Reynolds followed with singles to knock in Charbonneau and Swetman, respectively. DiNorcia then walked to force in Wright, while West scored as Buroni was hit by a pitch.
The Panthers scratched across four runs in the bottom of the ninth on five hits to end the game's scoring. Third baseman Rob Burns singled to center to open the inning and then took second on a walk by right fielder Chad Houghton. After an out, first baseman Tyler Decker doubled down the left field line to plate Burns. Catcher Daniel Taliercio followed with a groundout to drive in left fielder Eric Hassell, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Second baseman Zack Levinson then doubled down the left field line to plate Decker. After a single by Stack, center fielder John Campbell singled to the shortstop to knock in Levinson.
Junior southpaw Jon Dunn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) earned his first win of the season after yielding four runs (two earned) on eight hits over six and one-third innings pitched, while striking out one batter. Charbonneau and Reynolds joined Swetman and West with recording four hits, while Nagelsmith had three hits and Buroni two as eight of the nine starters had at least one of Le Moyne's season-high 23 hits. Michael Ceparano took the loss for the Panthers after giving up five runs (two earned) on four hits in just one inning on the mound.
Le Moyne (13-18, 7-5 NE-10, 4-4 SW), which scored 37 runs in the three-game series with the Panthers, is back in action on Monday with a doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State at 1:00 p.m.
