Syracuse, N.Y. – Connor Moriarty struck out seven in a complete-game performance to lead the University of New Haven to a 5-1 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Dick Rockwell Field.
Prior to the game, the Dolphin Athletic Association honored the senior class of left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) and center fielder Pat Wiese (Fayetteville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Syracuse) for their contributions to the program.
Following four scoreless innings around a 50-minute rain delay heading into the bottom of the second inning, the Chargers scored the only runs they would need on four hits in the top of the fifth inning. After shortstop Tom Walraven reached on a bunt single down the third baseline with one out, second baseman Andrew Johnson singled up the middle. Following a fly out, designated hitter Chris DeMorais singled to left field to drive in Walraven, who slid around the tag at the plate. Third baseman Brendon Buckley then singled through the left side to knock in Johnson from third.
New Haven took advantage of a Le Moyne error in the top of the seventh to plate two runs. After walking to open the frame, Walraven was safe at second on a high throw by the pitcher as Johnson reached on a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Following a successful sacrifice bunt by center fielder Brendan O'Reilly to advance each runner a base, DeMorais lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to knock in Walraven. Buckley followed with a single up the middle to drive in Johnson.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh with one run on two hits. Junior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) singled to left center with one out, but was retired at second as junior right fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) reached on a fielder's choice. After Mathers stole second, his third stolen base of the game, sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled through the right side to drive in Mathers.
The Chargers got the run back in the top of the eighth on just one hit. Left fielder Kyle Cullen drew a walk to open the frame and then right fielder Eddie Tammaro was hit by a pitch. Walraven then beat the throw at first for a bunt single to load the bases. After Cullen was retired at the plate, Johnson broke up a potential double play at second base, which allowed Tammaro to score.
Le Moyne put a pair of runners on base in each of the eighth and ninth innings, but Moriarty was able to get out of each inning unscathed.
Redshirt freshman righty Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) dropped to 0-2 at home after yielding two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings, while striking out five. Charbonneau and Reynolds each recorded three of Le Moyne's nine hits. Moriarty, who tossed 164 pitches, including 105 for strikes, scattered nine hits and five walks in his first start of the season.
Le Moyne (14-20, 8-7 NE-10, 5-6 SW), which has split its last 12 games, hosts New Haven for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12:00 p.m.
