Briarcliff, N.Y. – Senior southpaw Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) became the program's career wins leader as the Le Moyne College softball team split a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader with Pace University on Saturday afternoon at Pace field. The Dolphins won the opener, 7-1, before falling in the nightcap, 9-1, in five innings.
With six strikeouts over seven innings in the first game of the day, Harrison earned her 75th career victory. She eclipsed the previous record of 74 set by Marnie Sundberg '03.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the first game with one run on two hits in the third inning. Following a one-out single to center by freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon), freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) tripled down the right field line with two outs to drive in Case.
The Setters evened the score at one in the bottom of the third on a one-out solo home run to right field by second baseman Lana Buchbinder.
Le Moyne regained the lead with four runs on five hits and one Pace error in the fifth inning. Senior right fielder Stephanie Ostrander (Gansevoort, N.Y./Schuylerville) led off with a single down the left field line, took second on a single to the pitcher by sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and advanced to third on an error by the second baseman. After Reynolds stole second, Case singled to center to drive in Ostrander and move Reynolds to third. Following out, Riley singled to the shortstop to knock in Reynolds. After a stolen base by Riley and an out, senior designated player Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled) doubled to center field to plate Case and Riley and force a Pace pitching change.
The Dolphins added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning. Following a single by senior second baseman Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to start the frame, Riley launched a home run to center field.
Riley finished the game with four runs batted in and three hits, falling just a double short of a cycle. Case, who had her streak of reaching base ended at 33 consecutive games on Friday afternoon, had two hits and two runs scored, while Utley posted two hits and two RBI. Caitlin McCann, who tossed seven scoreless innings on Friday, took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over four and two-thirds innings.
In the nightcap, the Setters jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the first out of the bottom of the first was recorded. After center fielder Shelby Yung singled to left and stole second, shortstop Jeane Drury blasted a two-run home run to left field. First baseman Natalie Gellos followed with a homer to center field. Following a Le Moyne pitching change, catcher Nikole Larm drilled a solo home run to right field.
Pace added one run on two hits in the second inning. Buchbinder led off with a single through the left side, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Yung and then came around to score on a single up the middle by Drury, who is also a reserve guard on the Pace women's basketball team.
The Dolphins cut into their deficit in the top of the fourth inning on a lead-off home run to left field by Riley.
The Setters got the run back in the bottom of the inning. After a double to left by Buchbinder to start the frame, Gellos singled to left with two outs to drive in Buchbinder.
Pace ended the game with three runs on four hits and a Le Moyne error in the fifth inning. Designated player Hana Wright and right fielder Samantha Garcia opened the frame with singles to left and center, respectively. After a sac bunt and a groundout, Buchbinder singled to left to plate Wright and Garcia, while advancing to third on a fielding error by the left fielder. Following a walk by Yung and an intentional walk to Drury to load the bases, Gellos singled to left field to knock in Buchbinder with the final run.
Harrison suffered the loss after yielding three runs on three hits without recording an out. Kaitlynn Nelson earned her sixth win of the year after striking out six batters over five innings, while giving up just the one run on three hits.
Le Moyne (24-16, 14-8 NE-10, 11-7 SW), which dropped three of its last four divisional games, finished in a three-way tie for second place with Pace and Adelphi University in the Southwest Division standings. Due to the Northeast-10 tie-breakers, Adelphi receives the second seed, Pace the third seed and the Dolphins the fourth seed. Le Moyne will open play in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Tuesday at Pace at a time still to be determined. The winner will advance to the six-team portion of the Championship, which will be hosted by top-seeded New Haven, and face the Northeast Division's second seed, either Saint Anselm College or Southern New Hampshire University, on Thursday.
