Worcester, Mass. – Sophomore right fielder/catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) had six hits and scored four runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Rocheleau Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 13-4, and took the nightcap, 5-3.
In the opening game, the Dolphins scored the first run on two hits in the second inning. Senior left fielder Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) singled up the middle with one out and then stole second with two outs. Freshman catcher/designated hitter Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) followed with a double to right center to knock in Reynolds.
Le Moyne extended its lead with six runs on seven hits in the fourth frame. Freshman designated hitter Tyler Piasecki (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville South) led off the frame with a single to third base and then advanced to third on a single up the middle by Buroni. After Piasecki was thrown out at home as junior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) reached on a fielder's choice, junior center fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) singled to right field to drive in Buroni from third. As Mathers stole second, Nagelsmith raced home with Le Moyne's third run. Following a single to the shortstop by sophomore second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), sophomore shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled to right field to plate Mathers. After an Assumption pitching change and a fly out, West singled to center to drive home Charbonneau. Swetman then scored on a passed ball. Reynolds followed with single to the shortstop to knock in West with the inning's final run.
The Greyhounds answered back with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning. Following one-out singles by designated hitter Michael Smith and catcher Tom Paine, shortstop Matt Murphy singled to the left side to drive in Smith. After a pop out, right fielder Ysander Figueroa blasted a three-run home run to right center.
Le Moyne pushed its lead to 9-4 with two runs on three hits and an Assumption error in the seventh inning. After West and Reynolds opened the frame with singles, Piasecki singled to right field to plate West, while Reynolds scored on an error by the right fielder.
The Dolphins closed out the game's scoring with four runs on two hits in the top of the ninth inning. West led off with a single up the middle and took second on a groundout. After Buroni and Nagelsmith were hit by pitches to load the bases, Mathers drew a walk to force in West. Charbonneau was then hit by a pitch to force in Buroni. Swetman followed with a single to left center to drive home Nagelsmith and Mathers.
Redshirt freshman righty Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) earned his team-best fourth win of the season by striking out five batters in his third complete game of the season, while yielding four runs on 15 hits. West had four hits and three runs scored, while Reynolds had three hits and Mathers, Swetman, Piasecki and Buroni each had two hits. Zack LaRosa took the loss for the Greyhounds after giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits over three and one-third innings.
In the nightcap, Assumption struck first with a run on one hit in the first inning. Figueroa led off with a double to center and then took third on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, third baseman Greg O'Donnell lifted a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Figueroa.
The Dolphins responded with two runs on two hits in the top of the second. West singled to the shortstop with one out and moved to second as Reynolds was hit by a pitch. Following an out, freshman third baseman Tyler Schmitt (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) doubled to left field to knock in West and Reynolds.
The Greyhounds evened the score at two apiece with a run on two hits in the fourth inning. O'Donnell led off with a double to right field and scored from third base on a two-out single down the left field line by Paine.
Le Moyne regained the lead with one run on one hit and an Assumption error in the fifth. Freshman right fielder Austin Bouse (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) reached on an error by the pitcher to open the frame and then took second on a sacrifice bunt by Mathers. Two batters later, Swetman singled to left field to drive in Bouse.
Assumption tied the score at three in the bottom of the fifth on three hits with two outs. Following singles to right field by left fielder Billy Johnson and O'Donnell, first baseman Mike Coggeshall doubled to left field to plate Johnson.
The Dolphins regained the lead with two runs on one hit in the seventh inning. Charbonneau was hit by a pitch to start the frame and then advanced to second as Swetman reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) followed with a double to left field to knock in Charbonneau. West then lifted a sac fly to center to drive in Swetman with the game's final run.
Freshman righty Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) improved to 3-1 on the season by striking out five in his third straight complete game, while yielding three runs on seven hits. West, Swetman and Wright each had two of Le Moyne's nine hits. Bill King took the loss out of the Greyhound bullpen after allowing two runs on one hit in one inning.
Le Moyne (8-14, 2-1 NE-10), which swept a doubleheader for the first time in eight chances this year, returns to action on Sunday with a doubleheader at Merrimack College at 12 p.m.
