SOFTBALL RECORDS SWEEP OF AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 8-4 AND 9-1

Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) had four hits and scored five times to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of American International College on Tuesday afternoon at the Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins won the Northeast-10 Conference contest, 8-4, and took the non-conference match-up, 9-1, in five innings.

In the first inning of the opening game, the Dolphins pushed across one run on two hits. Case led off with a single up the middle and then took second on a one-out wild pitch. After an out, sophomore third baseman Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) lined a single into center field to drive in Case.

The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the top of the second with two runs. After a walk by shortstop Haley Marchand and an out, catcher Katie Merrill blasted a home run over the fence in right center.

Le Moyne regained the lead in the third with two runs on two hits. Senior second baseman Sarah Tram (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) reached on a bunt single in front of the plate to open the frame, took second on a sacrifice bunt and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk and a steal of second by Trotta, senior designated player Vanessa Utley (Monroe, Ga./Homeschooled) singled to center to plate Tram and Trotta.

American International evened the score at three apiece in the fourth with a run on two hits. Merrill led off with a single through the left side, took second on a sac bunt and then scored on a double to right center by center fielder Kristen Steele.

The Dolphins took the lead for good with four runs on two hits and an AIC error in the bottom of the frame. Case drew a walk with one out, moved to second on a single by Tram and then scored on a single up the middle by freshman center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park). Following a pitching change and an out, sophomore left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) walked to load the bases. Tram then raced home on a wild pitch to make the score 5-3. After Utley walked to load the bases again, junior catcher Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) reached on dropped pop up by the first baseman, which allowed Riley and Reynolds to score.

Le Moyne tacked on one run on one hit in the fifth inning. Case reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to start the inning and then took second on another bunt single by Tram. Following an out, Case scored from third on a groundout to the first baseman by Trotta.

American International ended the game's scoring with a run on two hits in the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Ainslee Penfield reached on an infield single to start the frame. After a pair of outs and a walk by pinch-hitter Lauren Tosi, Penfield scored on a single to left by second baseman Lyndsey Letourneau.

Senior lefty Sarah Harrison (Canandaigua, N.Y./Cobleskill-Richmondville) struck out seven batters to earn her ninth win of the year, while yielding four runs on seven hits. Kelsey Malloy took the loss for the Yellow Jackets after giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits over three and one-third innings.

In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets scored once on one hit in the first inning. First baseman Yamilette Lopez-Perez singled up the middle to start the game and then advanced to third as Marchand reached on an error on a sac bunt attempt. Letourneau followed with a sacrifice fly to center to knock in Lopez-Perez.

The Dolphins exploded for five runs on three hits and two AIC errors in the bottom of the first. Case singled up the middle to start the frame and extend her streak of safely reaching base to 20 games. She then moved to third as Tram reached on a dropped throw by the first baseman on a sacrifice-bunt attempt. After Riley walked to load the bases, Case scored on a wild pitch. Following a hard-hit single to the third baseman by Trotta to load the bases again, Tram and Riley scored on a single up the middle by Reynolds, while Trotta and Reynolds scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Le Moyne scored twice on one hit and one AIC error in the fourth inning. Case led off with a single to the third baseman and then took second on a sacrifice bunt. On a walk by Riley, Case took third and Riley advanced to second on a wild pitch. Case then scored on a wild pitch, while Riley scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

The Dolphins ended the game with two runs on three hits in the fifth inning. Utley opened the frame with a single to the third baseman and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman pitcher Chelsea Claflin (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) walked and Capuano singled to the third baseman to load the bases. After Utley was retired at home on a fielder's choice, Case singled up the middle to drive in Claflin and Capuano and trigger the "eight-run rule".

Claflin registered her fifth straight win by allowing just the unearned run in the first inning on six hits, while striking out two over five innings in the circle. In addition to Case's three hits, Claflin went 2-for-2. Brittany Fusek suffered the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits over four innings.
