Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior left fielder
Nate Reynolds (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) drove in the game-winning run in both games as the Le Moyne College baseball team swept American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins won the opening game, 2-1, while rallying for a 6-5 victory in 14 innings in the nightcap.
With the two victories, the Dolphins finish divisional play 10-8 to claim the third seed in the Southwest Division of next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championships for the second straight year. The Dolphins will visit the division's second seed, the University of New Haven, on Wednesday afternoon. Game time will be announced, along with the remainder of the field, by the conference office on Monday evening. The winner of the match-up will advance to the four-team, double-elimination portion of the Championships, which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed from the Northeast Division, either Southern New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce, Bentley or Stonehill. The double-elimination portion, which also includes the winners of the two Northeast Division first round games, will run from Friday until Sunday.
After three scoreless innings to start the opener, the Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore second baseman/shortstop
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled through the left side with one out and then took second on a wild pitch. After sophomore first baseman
Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) reached on a fielder's choice, in which Charbonneau was thrown out, sophomore designated hitter
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and Reynolds drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Wright was then awarded home plate on a balk by American International pitcher Dave Kerlejza.
The Yellow Jackets stayed alive in the game as left fielder Tyler Geffert blasted a one-out solo home run to right center in the ninth inning.
The Dolphins (19-22, 13-9 NE-10, 10-8 SW) registered the first of their two walk-off victories in the bottom of the ninth inning. Charbonneau led off with a single to left field. Wright followed with a push bunt into the triangle between the pitcher, first baseman and second baseman and was able to beat the throw, while taking second as the pitcher threw the ball wide of first. After West was intentionally walked to load the bases, Reynolds was hit with a 2-1 pitch to force in Charbonneau with the game-winning run.
Freshman righty
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) tossed his second straight complete game and his fifth of the season, both of which are tied for second in the Northeast-10, to improve to 5-1 on the year, while striking out six (without a walk) and scattering six hits. Kerlejza took the loss, his third of the season, after yielding two runs on just three hits over eight innings, while striking out four and walking three, including one intentionally.
In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets took advantage of a Le Moyne miscue in the second inning to get on the board first. Geffert was hit by a pitch to open the frame, but was replaced on the basepaths as shortstop Eddie Ritch reached on a fielder's choice. Following a single to the shortstop by second baseman/third baseman Brett Bohl and a walk by second baseman Anthony Crudale to load the bases, Ritch raced home on a passed ball with two outs.
The Dolphins evened the score at one apiece in the bottom of the inning on one hit. With one out, Reynolds reached second on a throwing error by the third baseman. After freshman center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) walked, freshman catcher
Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) singled to left field to drive in Reynolds.
American International regained the lead with three runs on two hits in the fourth inning. Ritch walked to open the frame and then stole second before Bohl was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Crudale and a strikeout, designated hitter Cam MacDonald singled up the middle to knock in Ritch and Bohl. Catcher Dan Fenton followed with a double to right to plate MacDonald from first.
The Yellow Jackets added a run on two hits in the fifth. First baseman Lucas Vallas led off with a single to third base and then moved to second on a groundout. After Ritch walked, Bohl singled through the right side to drive in Vallas.
The Dolphins started to chip away at their four-run deficit with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. After West reached on a wild pitch on a swinging third strike, Reynolds drilled the ball over the fence in left field to make the score 5-3.
Le Moyne, which swept a three-game divisional series for the first time this year after posting two each of the previous two seasons, evened the score at five apiece on two hits and two American International errors in the bottom of the eighth. West led off with a single to third base and then took second on a wild pitch. Reynolds followed by pulling a double inside third base to knock in West. After freshman center fielder
Ryan Masetta (Amarillo, Texas/Randall) reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, he stole second base with one out, while taking third on a throwing error by the catcher, which allowed Reynolds to score the tying run. AIC's Steve Pino induced a pair of groundouts back to the mound to leave Masetta stranded at third.
Following five scoreless innings, in which the Dolphins advanced a pair of runners to third base with two outs, Le Moyne scored the winning run in the bottom of the 14th on two hits. Charbonneau led off with a single through the left side and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wright. After a line out, Reynolds lined a single to left field to drive in Charbonneau.
Junior southpaw
Bobby Renaud (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) tossed seven scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn his first win as a Dolphin. He struck out four batters, while allowing just one hit and two walks. Reynolds finished the game with four hits, four runs batted in and three runs scored, while Charbonneau had three hits. Jeff Kraucunas took the loss after giving up one run on three hits over one and two-thirds innings pitched.
