#12/14 STONEHILL THWARTS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL’S UPSET BID, 76-71

Syracuse, N.Y. – Jamie Panton hit a go-ahead three-pointer with just under three minutes left to lift No. 12/14 Stonehill College to a 76-71 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Seniors Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) and Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) each scored 22 points in the setback for the Dolphins. Marple, who scored 13 of her points in the first half, added a season-high six rebounds and three assists, while playing all 40 minutes for the first time in her 100-game career. Greer posted 20 points over 20 second-half minutes, while finishing the game with five rebounds and a steal. Junior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College), this week's Northeast-10 Co-Player of the Week, tallied 11 points and a game-best seven rebounds.

Tori Faieta, a two-time Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference selection, led four Skyhawks in double figures with 19 points, while adding seven rebounds and three assists. Kelly Martin and Amy Pelletier each scored 12 points, while Martin dished out eight assists and Pelletier handed out five. Paige Marshall added 11 points and five rebounds.

After the Dolphins posted an 8-2 run, capped by a top-of-the-key three-pointer from junior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North), to take their only lead of the game with 3:13 remaining in the contest, Panton answered back just 24 seconds later with a three-pointer from the left wing to give the Skyhawks the lead for good. Marshall then made a pair of shots off feeds from Martin around two Marple free throws to put Stonehill up by four.

Greer countered with a step-back three-pointer from the right wing to get the Dolphins within one with 56.5 seconds left, but that's as close as the Dolphins would get. With the three-pointer, her fifth of the game, Greer moved into a tie for fifth place on the program's career three-point field goals made list with 105.

Martin made three free throws and Marshall hit one over the final 43 seconds to deliver the final score.

Stonehill opened the game with the first eight points over the opening two minutes. Faieta hit a three-pointer and made a lay-up before Pelletier buried a three-pointer to force a Le Moyne timeout.

The Dolphins answered back with nine of the next 14 points to get within four with 14:17 left in the half. Andrade started the scoring with a jumper, Marple netted four points and then senior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) drilled a three-pointer from the top of the key.

The Skyhawks responded with 10 straight points to open up their largest lead of the game with 8:23 left. Martin and Samantha Hyslip each posted four points before Marshall converted a lay-up for a 23-9 advantage.

Le Moyne countered again with a 15-4 run, which included nine straight points on the back end. Marple registered nine of the 15, including the last five, while Pucello, Salzbrenner and Greer each added to points as the Dolphins cut their deficit to 27-24 with 2:24 to go.

Stonehill closed out the half with six of the last eight points to take a 33-26 lead into the intermission. Faieta and Panton each had three points around two free throws from Salzbrenner.

Andrade scored the first four points of the second half to get the Dolphins within three, but the Skyhawks countered with a 12-4 run to extend their lead back to 11 at the 14:39 mark. Faieta had four points, Pelletier and Martin scored three and Marshall capped the streak with a fast-break jumper.

Following eight points from each team over the next four minutes, Le Moyne scored 11 straight points over 2:38 to knot the game for the first time at 53-apiece. Greer scored the first eight points on a pair of three-pointers around a lay-up, while Marple capped the outburst with a conventional three-point play with 7:37 remaining.

After ties at 55 and 58, the Skyhawks took a 63-58 lead with 5:16 left after a lay-up by Faieta and a three-pointer from the left wing by Panton.

The Dolphins then embarked on their 8-0 to take their only lead of the game. Marple made two free throws and then Andrade registered a conventional three-point play after grabbing an offensive rebound to tie the score at 63 with 4:08 left. Following a Hyslip lay-up with 3:31 to go, Salzbrenner drained her three-pointer with 3:13 left on the clock for the lead.

Le Moyne (14-6, 8-5 NE-10), which had its six-game win streak snapped, faces Franklin Pierce University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
