SIXTH-RANKED ADELPHI REGISTERS 91-68 WIN OVER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Anh-Dao Tran scored a career-best 28 points to lead sixth-ranked Adelphi University to a 91-68 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

The Dolphins were led offensively in the setback by senior guard Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro), who tallied 15 points, 10 of which she scored in the second half. Junior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) came off the bench to register 13 points and six rebounds, while senior forward Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) posted 11 points in a reserve role. Junior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) was the fourth Dolphin in double-digits with 11 points, while dishing out a team-best four assists.

Tran, a graduate student who played her first three seasons at league foe New Haven before having to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, tallied 14 points (her season average) in each half to lead the Panthers, while dishing out nine assists and grabbing six rebounds. Kelly Mannix, Jenna Halaby and Calli Balfour each scored 15 points in the contest with Balfour scoring 10 of her points in the first half and Halaby netting 10 of her 15 in the second half. Mannix pulled down eight rebounds, while Balfour had six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Sierra Clark came off the bench to register a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Panthers (13-0, 6-0 NE-10) opened the game with the first five points and ran out to a 20-3 lead at the 13:39 mark. Balfour had the first five points, Samantha Brenner followed with four straight and then Tran hit three shots from three-point range around a Mannix jumper.

After the teams split the next 16 points over 3:10, the Dolphins registered a 12-4 run to get within single digits with 6:08 left in the stanza. Senior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) bookended the streak with a lay-up and a three-pointer, while freshman guard Austin Stevens (Adams Center, N.Y./South Jefferson) had four points and Andrade had the other three.

Following three-pointers from Balfour and Marple, the Panthers closed out the scoring in the half with a 13-2 jaunt over the last 4:12 to take a 48-28 lead into halftime. Six different players accounted for the 13 points, led by a three-pointer by Mannix.

The Dolphins opened the second half with 13 of the first 18 points to trim their deficit to 12 with 15:10 to play. Greer started the scoring with a three-pointer, Brown followed with four points, Marple added four more in a span of 13 seconds and then freshman guard Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) had a steal and fast-break lay-up.

Adelphi responded with an 8-3 run to push its margin back to 17 with just over 12 minutes remaining. Halaby had the first four points, Tran made two free throws and then Clark converted a jumper in the paint for a 61-44 advantage.

Le Moyne answered back with its final run, an 11-2 jaunt, to get within eight points for the first time since the opening minutes of the contest. Pucello ignited the run with a three-pointer and then Marple, junior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wisc./Sheboygan North), Andrade and Brown followed with two points each to make the score 63-55 with 7:52 to go.

The Panthers countered with a 10-0 run over 99 seconds to regain control of the contest. Tran and Mannix each had four points in the span, while Halaby had the other two.

Adelphi put the game away with 18 of the game's final 31 points. Tran had six of the points, Halaby had four and four other players had two points each, while Pucello had five of Le Moyne's 13 and Andrade added four.

Le Moyne (8-5, 2-4 NE-10), which has lost each of its last three matchups with the Panthers by exactly 23 points (82-59, 80-57, 91-68), opens Northeast-10 Conference cross-divisional play on Wednesday at defending national champion Bentley University at 5:30 p.m.
