WOMEN’S BASKETBALL KNOCKS OFF DEFENDING CONFERENCE CHAMPION ADELPHI, 65-58

Garden City, N.Y. – Senior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) recorded a double-double to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 65-58 victory over defending Northeast-10 Conference champion Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Brown registered game-highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, while adding three assists and two steals. Senior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) made six of her eight shots en route to 12 points in just 19 minutes, while adding five rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

Ashley Gomez led the Panthers in the loss with 18 points, 11 of which she scored in the second half, while adding six rebounds.

The Panthers opened the game with the first five points and 16 of the first 20. Tara Flynn nailed a pair of three-pointers in the stretch, while Calli Balfour had six points and Gomez scored the other four points.

Andrade responded with six points in 54 seconds to trim Le Moyne's deficit in half with 12 seconds left in the quarter before Haley Parks hit two free throws with one second left to put the Panthers in front 18-10 after one quarter.

Adelphi registered the first nine points of the second quarter to take a 27-10 lead 3:48 into the period. After Sierra Schrader opened the quarter with a free throw, Gomez and Lauren Nuss hit three-pointers and then Nuss made a jumper.

After the teams traded lay-ups, the Dolphins scored the final 17 points over the last 4:16 of the quarter to knot the score at 29-apiece at halftime. Following a lay-up by Andrade, sophomore forward Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) scored six points around a lay-up by Brown to get the Dolphins within 29-23 with 1:25 left. Brown then made consecutive baskets before senior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) closed out the half's scoring with a lay-up.

After the Panthers scored the first four points of the third quarter, Le Moyne scored 18 of the next 25 points to take a seven-point lead with 2:46 left in the period. Brown led the charge with seven points, freshman guard Melanie Quijano (San Diego, Calif./Horizon Christian) tallied five points and junior guard Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) capped the run with a three-pointer.

The Panthers responded with eight straight points to take the lead back. Gomez had a conventional three-point play and a lay-up before Nuss buried a three-pointer.

Adelphi's final lead only lasted 14 seconds as Brown hit a jumper to close out the third quarter and give the Dolphins a 49-48 lead.

After Gomez tied the score with a free throw 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Dolphins rattled off nine of the next 10 points to take the lead for good. Webster gave her team the lead with a jumper, sophomore guard Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) made a jumper, Quijano scored three straight points and then Brown converted a put-back lay-up for a 58-50 lead.

Adelphi cut its deficit to four points on a pair of occasions, but Salzbrenner made four foul shots and Brown made two free throws to put the game away.
