BASEBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 8-3 WIN OVER LIMESTONE COLLEGE

Gaffney, S.C. – Sophomore center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) recorded three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 8-3 win over Limestone College in its season opener on Friday afternoon at Founders FCU Stadium.

The Dolphins opened the game with two runs on three hits in the first inning. DiNorcia led off the contest with a single up the middle and then stole second. After junior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled to center and stole second, junior catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in DiNorcia. Redshirt sophomore designated hitter Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) followed with a single to left center to plate Charbonneau.

Le Moyne followed with two runs on three hits again in the second inning. Freshman left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy (Maine)) led off the frame with a double to left field and then advanced to third on a ground out. Two batters later, DiNorcia tripled to right field to knock in Pittman. Charbonneau followed with a single to the right side of the infield to drive in DiNorcia.

The Dolphins tacked on two runs on three hits in the fourth inning. With one out, Pittman doubled to right center and then came around to score on a single to left center by senior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany), who took second on the throw home. Following an out, DiNorcia doubled to left field to drive in Nagelsmith.

Limestone (3-4) cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the seventh inning with three runs on two hits. Designated hitter Dan Smith led off with a single to right center and then moved to second on a walk by second baseman Logan Conley. After a sacrifice bunt moved each runner up a base, third baseman Austin Marcellus drew a walk on seven pitches to load the bases. Following a Le Moyne pitching change and the second out of the frame, shortstop Khari Anderson tripled to left center to plate Smith, Conley and Marcellus. Senior righty Conor Nolan (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) worked out of the jam by inducing a ground out for the final out of the inning.

Le Moyne added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning on three hits. Charbonneau singled to the shortstop with one out and then moved to second on a ground out. Junior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) then doubled to left center to drive in Charbonneau. Martin followed with a single to center to knock in Wright with the final run.

Senior southpaw Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) earned his 11th career win after scattering four hits and striking out five batters over six and one-third innings on the mound, while yielding three runs. DiNorcia fell a home run shy of the cycle and scored a pair of runs. Charbonneau joined DiNorcia in registering three hits and two runs scored, while adding one run batted in. In their Dolphin debuts, Martin and Pittman each recorded two hits, while Martin drove in a pair of runs and Pittman scored two. Nagelsmith was the fifth Dolphin with multiple hits, while adding a run scored and an RBI.

Jameson McGrane suffered his second loss of the season for the Saints after allowing six runs on 10 hits over six innings, while striking out eight batters. Smith led the Saints offensively with two of their six hits.

Le Moyne (1-0), which scored its most runs in its season opener since the 2010 season, takes on the Saints in a doubleheader on Saturday. The teams will meet in a nine-inning contest at 12:00 p.m. and then play a seven-inning game to conclude the series.
