Syracuse, N.Y. – Krista Ferrentino registered 20 points as American International College rallied for a 71-63 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Senior forward
Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) led the Dolphins with 20 points, 11 of which she scored in the first half. With her 12th point of the game, she became the 17th player in the program's history to score 900 career points, while she is just one of seven players in the program's history to score more than 900 points (908) and grab more than 525 rebounds (530 in her career). With four three-pointers in the contest, Greer upped her season total to 55, the fifth-most in a season in the program's history. Junior guard
Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) registered 16 points (10 in the second half) and pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, while senior guard
Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) tallied 12 points and a team-high three assists.
Ferrentino registered 12 of her points in the first half, while finishing the game with five rebounds and four steals. Alyssa Roach posted 16 points, a game-high nine rebounds and a game-best seven assists. Imani Stepney recorded 13 points and pulled down five rebounds.
After the Yellow Jackets took a 4-3 lead on a Kamika Mason lay-up, the Dolphins scored eight straight points on a three-pointer by senior forward
Tessa Pucello (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay), a fast-break lay-up by Andrade and a three-pointer by Greer.
American International scored seven of the next nine points to get within two with 14:43 remaining. Roach nailed a three-pointer and then Ferrentino made two jump shots.
The Dolphins answered with a 12-3 run over 2:58 to take their largest lead of the game, 25-14, with 11:20 left. Greer netted the first eight points and Andrade capped the stretch with two lay-ups.
Following two and one-half minutes of scoreless action, the Yellow Jackets scored eight straight points over 1:16 to trim their deficit to three. Ferrentino made a lay-up and Roach and Brianna Bishop followed with three-pointers to force a Le Moyne timeout.
The Dolphins used a 7-2 run to push their lead back to eight, but AIC responded with a 9-3 spurt to get within 35-33 with 1:36 left in the half. Marple accounted for five of Le Moyne's 10 points in the stretch, while Stepney had five of AIC's 11 points.
Le Moyne made three free throws over the last 1:28 of the half to take a 38-35 lead into halftime.
After the Dolphins scored the first three points of the second half, American International scored the next nine to regain the lead for the first time since the opening minutes of the game. Mason started the run with a jumper, Stepney made two lay-ups to tie the score and then Bishop buried a three-pointer for the lead with 15:22 left.
Following ties at 47 (10:55), 49 (8:29) and 51 (7:35), the Yellow Jackets scored eight straight points and 19 of the next 27 to take the lead for good. Ferrentino started the stretch with four straight points and six of the first eight points, while Roach had six of the last eight points.
Le Moyne (15-12, 9-10 NE-10), which dropped into a tie with the Yellow Jackets for the fourth seed in the Southwest Division, closes out the regular season on Tuesday at home against Pace University (12-15, 6-13 NE-10) at 5:00 p.m. The Dolphins will claim the fourth seed with a win over the Setters and an AIC loss to Southern Connecticut State. A Le Moyne loss or an AIC win pushes the Dolphins into the fifth seed. As the fourth seed, the Dolphins would host Saint Michael's, Saint Anselm or Bentley on Friday, February 27. As the fifth seed, the Dolphins would travel to Assumption or Merrimack on the 27th.
