Lincoln University, Pa. – Bluefield State College scored the last six points of the game to defeat the Le Moyne College women's basketball team, 76-72, on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the ECAC Championships at The Lincoln University's Manuel Rivero Hall.
Le Moyne finishes the season with a record of 17-14. The 17 wins are the fourth-most in the program's 39-year history and are the most since the 2001-02 season. Bluefield State, which won last year's ECAC Championship, advances to the title game and will face The Lincoln University on Sunday afternoon.
Senior guard
Alex Marple (Covington, Pa./Wellsboro) led four Dolphins to score in double digits with 17 points, while adding five rebounds, four assists and two steals. She finishes her 111-game career with 1234 points, the seventh-most in the program's history. The 111 games are the most in the program's history without the use of a redshirt season. With her 5-for-6 performance at the foul line, Marple closes out her career with 362 free throws made and 467 attempted, the fourth-most makes and the fifth-most attempts in the history. Her free throw percentage of .775 is the third-best all-time. She finishes as one of seven players in the program's history to register at least 1000 points and 175 assists. On the single-season chart, she finishes the year second in points (524) and fourth in field goals made (174), free throws made (143) and free throws attempted (181), while playing 1051 minutes, the most in the program's history.
Junior guard/forward
Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) registered 16 points, six rebounds (five offensive) and four assists. Junior guard
Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) posted 15 points and six rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Andrade finishes the season with 428 points and 244 rebounds. Her rebound total is the sixth-most in the program's history, while her point total is the eighth-highest in a single season and the most by the team's second-leading scorer in 23 years. Her 121 offensive rebounds are the second-most in a season, while her 68 rebounds are ninth and the most since the 2002-03 season. Senior forward
Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) nailed four three-pointers in a 12-point performance, while pulling down five rebounds. With her final three-pointer of the game, Greer moved into second place on the program's made three-pointers list with 136. Also, her 555 career rebounds are the 13th most.
Charity Harris led Bluefield State with a game-high 24 points, 13 of which she scored in the second half, while adding seven assists, four rebounds and four assists. Tasia Nolan recorded 16 points, including 12 in the first half, and a game-best eight rebounds, while dishing out three assists. Hope Smith posted 12 points, including 10 in the second half, five rebounds and two steals.
After the teams split the first 16 points of the game, Bluefield State scored eight of the next 10 points to open up a six-point lead with 13:03 left in the first half. Nolan scored four of the eight points in the span for the Lady Blues.
Following back and forth action over the next eight minutes, which resulted in a 31-23 Bluefield State lead, the Dolphins scored 12 straight points over 1:07. Brown ignited the run with a put-back lay-up, sophomore guard
Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) converted a fast-break lay-up off a steal by Marple, who then posted another steal and made a lay-up to get the Dolphins within two. Greer followed with a three-pointer off a feed from Brown, who then capped the jaunt with a conventional three-point play.
Bluefield State answered back with 10 consecutive points over almost three minutes to regain its six-point lead. Tanasia Blake started the streak with a lay-up and Harris followed with a fast-break lay-up to tie the score at 35. Nolan then hit a pair of shots in the paint before Tenika Jackson gave the Lady Blues a 41-35 lead with 29 seconds left in the half.
Marple made two free throws with seven seconds left to get the Dolphins within 41-37 at halftime.
After each team scored over the first three minutes of the second half, the Dolphins scored 14 of the next 16 points to open up an eight-point lead, 53-45, with 12:30 left. Greer hit a three-pointer to start the run, Andrade followed with a pair of lay-ups, Greer buried another three-pointer, Brown made a jumper and then Marple knocked down a jump shot in transition.
Bluefield State answered back with a 20-9 run over six minutes to take a three-point lead. Harris scored the first seven points, Smith followed with six straight, Harris made a lay-up, Tonya Jackson tied the score at 62 with a fast-break lay-up off a steal and then Shamika Wiggins buried a three-pointer for the lead.
After Brown and Harris traded lay-ups for a 67-64 Bluefield State lead with 5:54 left, the Dolphins scored six straight points over the next two and one-half minutes. Brown made one free throw and then Marple followed with two with 4:14 left to tie the score at 67. Andrade gave the Dolphins the lead by making a foul shot with 3:47 to play and Marple pushed the lead to 70-67 with a jumper with 3:22 remaining.
Bluefield State scored nine of the game's last 11 points for the victory. Wiggins made two foul shots with 2:40 remaining and then Tonya Jackson hit a free throw with 2:11 left to knot the score at 70. After Andrade put the Dolphins back in front with a lay-up with 1:31 to go, Nolan tied the score for the sixth and final time with a lay-up with 1:06 remaining. Nolan scored the game-winning basket with a lay-up with 25 seconds left. After a Le Moyne turnover with 10 seconds remaining, Harris capped the game's scoring with two free throws with eight seconds left.
