BASEBALL DEFEATS SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE, 7-3, ON “SENIOR DAY”

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior right fielder Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) had three hits and classmate Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) tossed eight innings to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 7-3 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Dick Rockwell Field.

Southern Connecticut State scored all three of its runs in the second inning on four hits. Left fielder Brandon Docimo singled to the shortstop with one out and then moved to second as shortstop Ethan Joyce drew a walk. Third baseman Greg Zullo then singled off the mound to load the bases. After Docimo was retired at home as right fielder McNeill Finnegan reached on a fielder's choice, center fielder Matt Burns singled up the middle to drive in Joyce and Zullo. Catcher Jake Liebermann then singled to right center to plate Finnegan.

Le Moyne started its comeback with one run on two hits in the bottom of the second. Senior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) singled through the left side with one out and took second on a walk by junior catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit). Following a single to left center by junior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to load the bases, Mathers drove in Nagelsmith with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Dolphins took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on four hits. Redshirt sophomore designated hitter Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) led off with a single to left field and then stole second base. After a groundout, West singled to center to knock in Martin. Following a walk by Wright, Mathers reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Freshman left fielder/right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) then singled to center to plate West. Junior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) gave the Dolphins the lead by lifting a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Wright.

Le Moyne extended its lead to four with three runs in the sixth inning on three hits. Nagelsmith led off with a single to center and then West was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Wright moved the runners up 90 feet, Nagelsmith scored on a broken-bat single to right center by Mathers, who then stole second. After an out, Charbonneau singled up the middle to drive in West and Mathers.

Davis won his fourth straight start to improve to 5-1 on the season after striking out six batters over eight innings, while yielding the three runs on six hits. Nagelsmith joined Mathers in posting multiple hits in the contest. A.J. Turnier took the loss, only his second in eight decisions, after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over five innings, while striking out two.

Le Moyne (12-15, 5-4 NE-10), which has won three straight conference games, completes its series with the Owls and its home schedule on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
