Syracuse, N.Y. – Nicole King and Victoria Cabral each tossed shutout to lead the University of New Haven to a sweep of the Le Moyne College softball team on Sunday afternoon at the Niland Athletic Complex. The Chargers took the opener, a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division matchup, 7-0, and won the nightcap, a non-conference meeting, 1-0.
The Chargers scored the only run they would need in the opening game on two hits in the third inning. Left fielder Erika Williams drew a walk with one out and moved to third on a double to center by center fielder Jen Palase. After a single by right fielder Tori Schiebe to load the bases, third baseman Gilly Childs lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Williams.
New Haven doubled its lead in the fifth on one hit. Following a one-out triple down the right field line by Palase, she scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Schiebe.
The Chargers took a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning on two hits. Shortstop Julie Devlin doubled down the left field line with out and came around to score on a double to left field by second baseman Gabby DeLeo.
New Haven tacked on four runs in the seventh on five hits. Williams, Palase and Schiebe each recorded singles to open the frame. Childs then singled to center field to drive in Williams and Palase. Following a pair of outs, DeLeo doubled down the right field line to knock in Schiebe and Childs.
Junior
Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) took the loss in the circle for the Dolphins after yielding three runs on seven hits over five and two-thirds innings. King registered nine strikeouts over seven innings to earn her sixth win, while allowing four hits and five walks.
Following six scoreless innings to start the nightcap, the Chargers took advantage of a Le Moyne error in the seventh inning to score the game's only run. Designated player Marissa Colby led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by DeLeo. First baseman Kristine Liptack followed with a single down the right field line to put runners at the corners. After a pop out, pinch-hitter Nicole D'Andrea reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, which allowed Colby to score the winning run.
Freshman
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) was the tough-luck loser after yielding just the one unearned run on four hits over seven innings, while striking out six. Cabral recorded seven strikeouts to earn her seventh win of the season, while giving up just two hits and one walk.
Le Moyne (16-11, 9-7 NE-10, 8-6 SW), which had its five-game win streak snapped, returns to action on Tuesday at American International College at 3:00 p.m. The first game is a Southwest Division matchup, while the nightcap is a non-conference game.
