Garden City, N.Y. – Sophomore shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) went 3-for-4 and drove in the winning run to give the Le Moyne College softball team a 3-2 win over Adelphi University in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at Janet L. Ficke Field. The Panthers won the opening game, 6-1.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap with one run on two hits in the third inning. Junior right fielder
Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) drew a walk to open the frame and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore center fielder
Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park). Following a single to center by sophomore third baseman
Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo), freshman pitcher
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) doubled to left center to drive in Trotta.
Le Moyne tripled its lead with two runs on three hits in the fifth inning. Junior left fielder
Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) doubled to right field with one out and came around to score on a double down the left field line by senior catcher
Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge), who snapped an 0-21 drought at the plate. Following a strikeout, Case doubled to center to knock in Capuano.
Adelphi got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth with one run on two hits. Designated player/catcher Megan Lewis led off with a single up the middle and moved to second as second baseman Nicole Camera was hit by a pitch following a Le Moyne pitching change. After a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Melaney Reichelt, right fielder Christina Palmenteri singled through the left side to drive in Lewis.
The Panthers cut their deficit to one in the bottom of the seventh, but left the tying run stranded at first base. Camera led off with a home run to right field to make it a 3-2 game. After an out, Palmenteri drew a walk, but junior pitcher
Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) induced a pair of fly outs to end the game.
Eastman earned her third win of the season in the circle after striking out three batters over four-plus innings, while yielding one run on four hits. Secreti earned her first save as a Dolphin by tossing the final three innings, while allowing one run on three hits. Joining Case with multiple hits was Reynolds as the Dolphins recorded 11 hits in the contest. Jasmine Ennabe took the loss for the Panthers after giving up three runs on nine hits and five walks over five innings, while striking out five.
In the opening game, the Panthers scored the only runs they would need on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Left fielder Krista King led off with a single to third base and moved around to third on a double down the left field line by first baseman Jordan Catalano. Shortstop Victoria Wink then reached on a fielder's choice to drive in King. Third baseman Brenna Martini followed with a double to left field to plate Catalano.
Le Moyne cut into its deficit with a run on two hits in the third inning. Junior first baseman
Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) opened the frame with a single up the middle and took second on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout, Case singled up the middle to knock in Cawley.
Adelphi regained its two-run lead in the fourth inning. Camera singled through the left side to open the inning, stole second with one out and then moved to third on a passed ball. Palmenteri followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Camera.
The Panthers scored three times on three hits and two Le Moyne errors in the sixth inning to complete the game's scoring. Camera singled to the shortstop with one out and moved to second as pinch-hitter Reichelt reached on an error by the third baseman. Following a strikeout, King singled to center field with Camera coming around to score on an error by the center fielder. Catalano then tripled down the right field line to drive in Reichelt and King.
Secreti took the loss in the circle after allowing six runs (two earned) on nine hits over six innings, while striking out three batters. Case and Cawley each had two of Le Moyne's six hits. Lindsay Mapes earned her sixth win of the season by striking out seven over seven innings, while giving up just one run on six hits.
Le Moyne (8-7, 2-5 NE-10, 2-5 SW), which snapped a five-game losing streak with the win in the nightcap, takes on the Panthers in another doubleheader on Friday. First pitch of the conference match-up is slated for 2:00 p.m. with the non-conference affair to follow.
