Albany, N.Y. – Junior second baseman
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) had three hits and scored three runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 10-4 win over The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Dolphins opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning without getting a hit. Freshman left fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) was hit by the third pitch of the game and then Charbonneau walked on five pitches. After sophomore center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to load the bases, Cox scored on a balk. Charbonneau then scored on a groundout to the shortstop, while DiNorcia came home on a groundout to the second baseman.
Le Moyne added one run on one hit in the second inning. Cox was hit by a pitch again in the second inning with two outs. After stealing second taking third on a wild pitch, Cox scored on a single to right center by Charbonneau.
The Golden Knights got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with two hits. Left fielder Nick Venier led off with a single to second baseman and moved to third on a single to right center by designated hitter Lukas Nethaway. Venier then scored as third baseman Mike Flynn grounded into a double play.
The Dolphins pushed their lead to 6-1 with two runs on three hits and one Saint Rose error in the fourth inning. Senior right fielder
Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) singled to right with one out, stole second and then took third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Cox then singled to right field to drive in Mathers. Following a walk by Charbonneau and a single to first base by DiNorcia to load the bases, junior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) lined a sacrifice fly to right to plate Cox.
Le Moyne scored three times on three hits in the sixth inning. Cox was hit by the fourth pitch of the inning and Charbonneau followed with a single to center to push Cox to third. DiNorcia then singled to left field to drive in Cox and Charbonneau and force a Saint Rose pitching change. After a pop out, redshirt sophomore designated hitter
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) singled to left to knock in DiNorcia.
Saint Rose scored twice on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the seventh to get within 9-3. Flynn reached on a fielding error by the third baseman with one out, but was then retired at second as second baseman Tyler Ungerland reached on a fielder's choice. Following a single to center by catcher Patrick Griffin and a wild pitch, shortstop Bray Curreri singled up the middle to score Ungerland and Griffin.
The Dolphins got one run back in the eighth on two hits. Charbonneau led off with a single to left field, stole second with one out and then scored on a Swetman single to right field.
The Golden Knights closed out the game's scoring with one run on one hit in the ninth inning. Nethaway walked to open the frame and took second on a one-out wild pitch. After a single to center by Ungerland, Nethaway scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Griffin.
Senior lefty
Bobby Renaud (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) earned his second victory of the year after striking out five over seven innings, while yielding three runs (one earned) on six hits. DiNorcia finished the game with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI, while Cox scored four times. Cox is the first Dolphin in six years to be hit by a pitch three times in one game and is just the second to be hit three times over the last 13 seasons. Bryan Carr took the loss for the Golden Knights after giving up nine runs (five earned) on eight hits over five-plus innings, while striking out one.
Le Moyne (14-19, 7-8 NE-10, 7-8 SW), which swept the season series with the Golden Knights for the first time in the four years as Northeast-10 opponents, starts its final series of the year on Friday against Pace University at 2:00 p.m. at SUNY Purchase in Purchase, N.Y. The Dolphins enter the final series of the season on the outside of the four-team Northeast-10 Championship field, but are only two games out of a tie for first place. A sweep of the Setters would guarantee a berth into the field, while they would need help if they win two of the three games.
