ADELPHI DOUBLES UP BASEBALL, 8-4, IN SOUTHWEST DIVISION ACTION

Garden City, N.Y. – Freshman right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) went 5-for-5, but it wasn't enough as the Le Moyne College baseball team fell to Adelphi University, 8-4, on Friday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Bonomo Field.

The Panthers, who were the visiting team since the three-game series was originally scheduled to be played in Syracuse, got on the scoreboard first with two runs on three hits in the second inning. Right fielder Nick Zito led off with single up the middle and moved to third on a one-out double to right by third baseman Donato Signore. Left fielder Eric Hassell followed with a ground out to drive in Zito. Center fielder John Fogarty then singled up the middle to knock in Signore.

Le Moyne got one run back in the bottom of the third on two hits. Sophomore third baseman Tyler Schmitt (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) singled up the middle to open the frame. After an out, Cox singled through the right side to move Schmitt to third. Junior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) then reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Schmitt to score.

Adelphi increased its lead to 4-1 in the fourth with two runs on one hit. Zito led off with a single through the right side, moved to second on a wild pitch and then stole third with one out. After Signore walked, Zito scored on a wild pitch as Hassell drew a walk. Fogarty and catcher Rich Cambria followed by drawing walks around Signore getting caught stealing home. Following a Le Moyne pitching change, second baseman Vincent Sharkey drew Adelphi's fifth straight walk to force in Hassell.

The Dolphins countered with one run on three hits in the bottom of the frame. Junior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and junior designated hitter Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) opened the inning with consecutive singles. After an out, junior shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled up the middle to drive in Wright.

Following two scoreless innings, the Panthers scored twice on two hits and one Le Moyne error in the seventh. Sharkey doubled down the left field line to open the frame and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. First baseman Robert Vani then singled to right field to plate Sharkey and force a Le Moyne pitching change. After the second out of the inning, designated hitter Kory Cassara was able to reach as the Le Moyne first baseman failed to catch the third out of the frame, which allowed Vani to score.

Le Moyne cut its deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the inning on two hits. Cox singled to left field with one out and moved to second on a walk by Charbonneau. Following an Adelphi pitching change, sophomore center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) singled to center to knock in Cox.

Adelphi pushed its lead back to four in the eighth. Hassell led off with a triple to center and then raced home on a passed ball with one out.

The Dolphins got back within three in the bottom of the eighth with one run on one hit. Schmitt tripled to center field with one out and scored on a ground out by redshirt sophomore pinch-hitter Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant). Cox and Charbonneau reached on infield singles around an Adelphi pitching change and then Charbonneau reached on an error to load the bases, but the bases were left loaded.

The Panthers delivered the final score with a one-out solo home run to center by Vani.

Sophomore righty Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) suffered his third loss of the season after allowing four runs on four hits and five walks over three and two-thirds innings. Cox is the first Dolphin to record five hits in a game since Brett Botsford '12 did so in six at-bats at Troy University on March 15, 2009. Swetman and Schmitt joined Cox with multiple hits as the Dolphins posted a 13-8 advantage in hits. Nikolas Batas earned the win out of the bullpen for the Panthers after yielding one run on one hit over two innings.

Le Moyne (7-10, 1-1 NE-10, 1-1 SW) continues its series with the Panthers on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m.
