Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore third baseman
Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) had four hits and five runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 10-2, in five innings and captured the nightcap, 5-2.
With the sweep, the Dolphins claim the remaining one-half of the softball point in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between Le Moyne and Saint Rose. Through 14 sports, the Dolphins and Golden Knights are tied, 7-7, with baseball and outdoor track remaining.
Sophomore center fielder
Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) opened the first game's scoring with a solo home run down the left field line with two outs in the first inning.
The Dolphins blew the game open with five runs on five hits in the second inning. Junior first baseman
Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) singled to left field with one out and moved to second on a single up the middle by senior catcher
Kristie Capuano (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge). After Cawley was retired at third as junior left fielder
Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) reached on a fielder's choice, sophomore shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) singled up the middle to drive in Capuano. Following a walk by senior pinch-hitter
Jillian Jacinth (West Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) to load the bases, Riley singled to second base to drive in Reynolds. Mascari then singled to left field to knock in Case and junior second baseman
Meagan Malarkey (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott/Broome C.C.). Riley then raced home on a passed ball.
Saint Rose cut into its deficit with two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning. After first baseman Taylor Snyder led off with a double to center field, center fielder Kari Bird walked and right fielder Marisa Bird singled to center field to load the bases. After a pair of outs, shortstop Danielle Brusca singled up the middle to drive in Snyder and Kari Bird.
Le Moyne got one of the runs back on two hits in the bottom of the fourth. Reynolds reached on a bunt single to open the inning and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher on a pickoff attempt. Following a bunt single by Case, Reynolds scored on a sacrifice bunt by Malarkey.
The Dolphins ended the game with three runs on four hits and one Saint Rose error in the fifth inning. Junior right fielder
Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) led off with a single to left field and then stole second base. After sophomore designated player/catcher
Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and Cawley walked to load the bases, Capuano singled to drive in Trotta. Reynolds followed with a single to plate Bagley. Case then singled to right center to knock in Cawley.
Junior righty
Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) earned her sixth victory of the season after yielding two runs on five hits over five innings, while striking out two batters. Case led Le Moyne's 13-hit attack with three hits, while Riley, Mascari, Capuano and Reynolds each had two hits. Nicole Wickham took the loss for the Golden Knights after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits over two innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins struck first again with one run on two hits in the first inning. Case led off with a double, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Malarkey and then scored on a single by Riley.
Saint Rose evened the score at one apiece on one hit and one Le Moyne error in the fourth inning. Second baseman Taylor Solomon singled to center to open the frame and she moved to third as third baseman Carly Wood reached on an error by the pitcher. Snyder then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Solomon.
Le Moyne regained the lead with four runs on four hits in the fifth inning. Reynolds led off with a bunt single and then Case lined a double to the gap in right center. Jacinth followed with a single to the shortstop to knock in Reynolds with the go-ahead run. After an out, Mascari lined a three-run home run over the fence in left center to give the Dolphins a 5-1 lead.
The Golden Knights plated one run on two hits in the sixth. Solomon singled to second with one out, moved to second on a ground out and then scored on a single up the middle by first baseman Karaqi.
Freshman righty
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) registered eight strikeouts to earn her fourth victory of the campaign, while yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits. Case and Mascari each had two of Le Moyne's eight hits. Ashlee Frazier suffered the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings, while striking out six.
Le Moyne (11-8, 4-5 NE-10, 4-5 SW) returns to action on Sunday for a Northeast-10 Conference crossover doubleheader at Merrimack College at 12:00 p.m.
