Purchase, N.Y. – Jonathan Chudy tossed a complete game in the opener and right fielder Michael Gulino recorded two hits and two RBI in the nightcap to lead Pace University to a sweep of the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon at SUNY Purchase. The Setters won the opener, 4-1, and held on for an 8-6 victory in the nightcap.
The Dolphins struck first in the opening game with one run on one hit in the first inning. Freshman left fielder
Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) led off with a single up the middle and then took second on a wild pitch. After a walk and a fielder's choice moved Cox to third, he scored on a sacrifice fly to right by junior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima).
Pace took the lead in the fourth inning on two hits and one Le Moyne error. Third baseman Nick LoBello singled to left field with one out and first baseman John Kukura followed with a double to right center. Right fielder Cory Capaldi then grounded out to Swetman to drive in LoBello and move Kukura to third. Kukura then scored on a throwing error by the catcher as left fielder Domenick Luongo reached on a wild pitch on a strikeout.
The Setters added one run on two hits in the fifth inning. Shortstop Brett Bittiger led off with a single to left center, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a groundout and scored on a single to the shortstop by catcher Tom Midolo.
Pace finished off the scoring with one run on two hits in the seventh inning. Designated hitter Paul Piccolino singled to left center with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a walk by LoBello, Kukura doubled to left center to drive in pinch-runner Jim Thorpe.
Sophomore righty
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) took the loss on the mound for the Dolphins after yielding four runs (three earned) on nine hits over six and two-thirds innings, while striking out eight. Chuddy allowed just four hits in the complete-game performance, while striking out eight.
Le Moyne scored first again in the nightcap with one run on two hits. Sophomore designated hitter
Tyler Piasecki (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville South) doubled down the right field line with one out and moved to third on a single to right field by junior shortstop
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). After an out and a walk to load the bases, senior second baseman
Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) drew a walk to force in Piasecki.
The Setters evened the score in the bottom of the first on two hits. Midolo singled to the pitcher with two outs and advanced to third on a ground-rule double down the right field line. Midolo then scored on a wild pitch.
Pace took the lead in the second on one hit. Gulino reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to start the inning. After an out, Luongo doubled to left center to drive in Gulino.
The Setters added two runs on three hits in the fourth inning. Gulino led off the frame with a home run to left field. Following a pair of outs, Bittiger singled, advanced to second and came around to score on a double to center by second baseman Andrew Coffey.
Le Moyne cut its deficit to 4-2 in the fifth without getting a hit. Piasecki walked with one out and then Charbonneau was hit by a pitch. Following an out, Piasecki scored on a wild pitch.
Pace pushed its lead to 6-2 in the sixth on just one hit and a Le Moyne error. Piccolino walked with one out and moved to second on a single though the left side by pinch-hitter Kyle Cashman. Piccolino then scored on a throwing error by the third baseman as Bittiger reached on a fielder's choice. Coffey followed with a sacrifice fly foul out to right field to plate Cashman.
The Setters increased their lead to five in the seventh on one hit and one Le Moyne error. Kukura reached second on a two-out throwing error by the third baseman. After stealing third, Kukura scored on a single to left by Gulino.
Le Moyne pulled within in the top of the eighth with four runs on three hits. Charbonneau drew a walk to start the inning and then freshman left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) was hit by a pitch with one out. After a walk by Nagelsmith and a Pace pitching change, sophomore third baseman
Tyler Schmitt (West Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) blasted a grand slam down the left field line.
The Setters finished off the game's scoring in the bottom of the inning. Center fielder Isaiah Rivera was hit by a pitch to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After an out, catcher Frank Mayo singled to the left side to drive in Rivera.
Sophomore righty
Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over four innings. Piasecki and Charbonneau each recorded two of Le Moyne's eight hits. Robert Rizzitelli picked up the win for the Setters after yielding two runs on four hits over six innings, while striking out five.
The Dolphins finish the season with a record of 14-22, including a mark of 7-11 in the Southwest Division.
