ANDRADE’S LAY-UP IN FINAL SECONDS GIVES WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 54-53 WIN OVER MERRIMACK

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) made a lay-up with 7.2 seconds left to give the Le Moyne College women's basketball team a 54-53 victory over Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Andrade, who was limited to two points and one rebound in just three minutes in the first half due to an injury and foul trouble, tallied her team-best seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) registered a career-best 10 points, including six in the second half.

Ashley Weissmann was the only Warrior to score in double-figures with a game-best 15 points, while adding a team-high seven rebounds.

After the teams split the first 10 points of the game, the Warriors scored five straight points on a three-pointer by Hannah Neild and a fast-break lay-up by My'Asia Alston with 4:09 left in the opening quarter. The Dolphins cut their deficit to two on a pair of occasions over the next two minutes, but Weissmann made two free throws and Madison Ward converted a jumper in the paint to give Merrimack its largest lead of the game.

Junior guard Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) posted four straight points to get the Dolphins within two with 24 seconds left, but Alston knocked down a jumper at the buzzer to give Merrimack an 18-14 lead after 10 minutes.

After the teams traded baskets to start the second quarter, the Dolphins tallied eight of the next 10 points to take a two-point lead. Demand and freshman guard Melanie Quijano (San Diego, Calif./Horizon Christian) each nailed three-pointers off passes from each other.

Merrimack registered seven of the last nine points of the half to take a 29-26 lead into the intermission. Lexi Martin scored the first four points, while Weissmann netted the final three, including a fast-break lay-up with nine seconds to go.

The teams went back and forth over the opening six minutes of the third quarter, with each team scoring nine points in the span. Andrade netted six of Le Moyne's points, while four Warriors combined for their nine points.

After Martin gave the Warriors a 38-35 lead with 4:11 remaining, the Dolphins rattled off eight straight points and 11 of the last 13 points to take a 46-40 lead into the fourth quarter. Following an Andrade lay-up, Leszyk buried a three-pointer and registered a conventional three-point play for a 43-38 edge. Senior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) drained a three-pointer with 20 seconds left to give the Dolphins the six-point lead heading into the final period.

After the teams traded points to start the fourth quarter, the Warriors scored five straight points to take a 51-50 lead with 3:41 remaining. Ward scored three points in a span of 1:25 and then Tia Scott converted a lay-up for the lead.

Andrade gave the lead back to the Dolphins with a jumper 29 seconds later, but Weissmann gave the lead back to Merrimack with a jumper in the paint with 2:07 remaining.

Following a 60-second scoreless possession by the Dolphins and two missed free throws by Scott with 30 seconds left, the Dolphins took possession on their half of the court out of a timeout with 28 seconds remaining. Andrade then drove to the left and converted a lay-up with 7.2 ticks left.

Merrimack called timeout and advanced the ball to its half of the court, but Alston was called for traveling with 0.8 seconds left after sophomore forward Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) contested her path to the basket.

Le Moyne (8-8, 5-5 NE-10), which has won three straight meetings with the Warriors, the longest streak since 2001, takes on Saint Michael's College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
