Easton, Mass. – Senior guard
Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) scored 16 points as the Le Moyne College women's basketball team won at Stonehill College, 65-55, on Wednesday night for the first time in the program's history.
The Dolphins, who are 6-8 all-time at home against the Skyhawks, dropped the previous 14 games played at Stonehill. The victory also snaps a six-game losing streak in the series.
Andrade tallied 14 of her 16 points after halftime, including 10 points in the third quarter, while adding four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Junior guard
Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) recorded 12 points, including six in the fourth quarter, and three rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
Maty Diabate led all scorers in the game with 22 points, including 15 points over the second and third quarters, while grabbing five rebounds. Kelly Martin was the second Skyhawk in double digits with 12 points, while dishing out seven assists before fouling out.
After Stonehill jumped out to a 9-2 lead 3:41 into the game, the Skyhawks didn't score the remainder of the opening quarter. Martin and Diabate each had three points, while two others combined for the other three.
The Dolphins closed out the quarter with the last 11 points to take a 13-9 advantage. Sophomore forward
Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles), who recorded a career-best five steals in the game, tallied four the points, while four others combined for the other seven.
Stonehill scored the first four points of the second quarter to even the score at 13 apiece with 6:49 to go.
The Dolphins answered with eight of the next 12 points to regain their four-point edge. Freshman guard
Melanie Quijano (San Diego, Calif./Horizon Christian) and Demand bookended the spurt with three-pointers.
The Skyhawks countered with seven consecutive points to take the lead. Kate Ross connected on a jumper and Diabate followed five straight points over three possessions for a 24-21 lead.
Le Moyne got within 24-23 at halftime as sophomore forward
Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) converted a put-back lay-up with 13 seconds left.
Following a fast-break lay-up by Diabate to start the scoring in the third quarter, the Dolphins scored six straight points to regain the lead for good. Quijano nailed a three-pointer and then Andrade tallied three points over two possessions.
After the Skyhawks got within 31-30 with 5:12 left, the Dolphins ran off nine straight points for their first double-digit lead of the game. Andrade netted the first five points and the final two, while freshman guard
Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) converted a lay-up.
The teams traded points over the final 1:05 of the quarter as the Dolphins took a 44-35 lead into the final stanza.
Following a pair of jumpers by Ross to get the Skyhawks within seven with 9:10 left, the Dolphins got consecutive lay-ups from Andrade, senior guard
Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) and Purcell to take their largest lead of the game, 52-39, with 7:22 left.
The Skyhawks answered with nine points over 2:19 to close within four points with 4:04 to go. Four different players accounted for the nine points, with the final two coming from Diabate.
Le Moyne thwarted Stonehill's comeback attempt with five of the next seven points. Demand made a free throw, Andrade converted a lay-up and then Dobrovosky beat the shot clock with a lay-up.
The Dolphins converted 8-of-12 free throw attempts in the final 65 seconds to close the game out. Demand made three around four straight from senior forward
Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) before Salzbrenner netted the game's final point.
Le Moyne (6-7, 3-4 NE-10), which has won three straight games, is back in action on Saturday at Assumption College at 1:00 p.m.
