New Haven, Conn. – Taylor McLaughlin scored 27 points to lead Southern Connecticut State University to a 74-53 victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Moore Field House.
Junior forward
Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) tallied her third double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-best 20 rebounds, including 12 in the first half. The 20 rebounds are the second most in a game in the program's history, trailing only Jennifer Shea's program record of 24 set on January 18, 1988. Junior guard
Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) also posted 12 points, while senior guard
Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) added 10 points.
McLaughlin registered 19 of her game-high point total in the first half, while adding seven rebounds. Maria Weselyj recorded 19 points, 12 of which she scored in the second half. Murphy Murad was the third Owl to score in double digits with 13 points, while adding five assists and five rebounds.
After the teams traded points over the opening 7:19, resulting in a 9-8 Le Moyne lead, Southern Connecticut State tallied seven straight points to take the lead for good. McLaughlin started the run with a three-pointer, Kiana Steinauer made a fast-break lay-up and then Imani Wheeler converted a lay-up.
Dobrovosky made a jumper with 34 seconds left in the quarter to get the Dolphins within 15-11 after one period.
The Owls pushed their lead to 11 with a 14-7 spurt to open the second quarter. McLaughlin led the charged with eight points, while Murad added five points.
Le Moyne got back within six with 2:55 left in the quarter nine of the next 13 points. Leszyk recorded five of the points with a fast-break lay-up and a three-pointer.
Southern Connecticut State blew the game open with a 12-2 run, which included nine straight points on the backend. Weselyj tallied five of the points, Abby Hurlburt had four and Murad capped the streak with a three-pointer.
Freshman guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) made a free throw with one second left to make the score 45-30 at halftime.
The Dolphins tallied nine of the first 11 points of the third quarter to get within eight. Dobrovosky made a jumper to start the run and Leszyk capped the streak with a four-point play with 4:46 left.
Southern Connecticut State pushed its lead to 11 on a pair of occasions before taking a 54-45 lead into the third quarter.
After Dobrovosky made a lay-up 33 seconds into the fourth quarter to get the Dolphins within seven, the Owls scored eight straight points to put the game away. Weselyj tallied five of the points for the Owls.
Following three Le Moyne free throws, Southern Connecticut State tallied 12 of the game's last 15 points over the final 3:41. Murad had the final five points after McLaughlin had four points and Weselyj had three.
Le Moyne (6-4, 3-3 NE10), which has dropped three straight games, returns to action on Monday, December 19 at Mansfield University at 5:30 p.m.
