Dinwiddie, Va. – Junior third baseman
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) recorded three hits and drove in both runs to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 2-1 win over Post University on Saturday afternoon at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with one run on two hits in the first inning. With two outs, junior center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) singled and then came around to score on a double by Levanti.
Post tied the score in the bottom of the third as right fielder Andrew Avots blasted a lead-off home run to left field.
Le Moyne regained the lead in the sixth inning with one run on two hits. Senior second baseman
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) led off with a single to left field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by DiNorcia. Levanti followed with a double to right center to plate Charbonneau.
Graduate student righty
Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) struck out 14 of the 19 batters he faced over the game's final five and two-thirds innings, while allowing just one hit. The 14 strikeouts are tied for the fourth-most by a Dolphin over the last 12 seasons and are the most in a relief appearance over that span. Charbonneau and senior catcher
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) joined Levanti with multiple hits. Matthew D'Ariano took the loss for the Eagles after giving up two runs on six hits over six and one-third innings, while striking out four batters.
Le Moyne (3-0), which has won its first three games for the first time since the 1999 season, is back in action on Sunday with a doubleheader against nationally-ranked Mercyhurst University at 10:00 a.m.
