Syracuse, N.Y. – All-conference guard Paige Marshall scored 18 points to lead fifth-seeded Stonehill College to a 56-51 victory over the fourth-seeded Le Moyne College women's basketball team on Friday night in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships First Round at Ted Grant Court.
Senior guard
Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College), who was named the Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year earlier in the day, closed out her career with a game-high 21 points and six rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Andrade finishes her two-year Le Moyne career with 855 points, the sixth-most by a Dolphin over a two-year span, while her 459 rebounds are also the sixth-most over a two-year stretch. Freshman guard
Melanie Quijano (San Diego, Calif./Horizon Christian) was the only other Dolphin to score in double-digits, registering 17 points, her second-highest total of the year. Senior forward
Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) pulled down a game-high seven rebounds to finish her career with 593, which is tied for the ninth-most in the program's history. The game marked the 112th of her career, which surpasses
Alex Marple '15 for the most by a four-year Dolphin.
Marshall tallied 12 of her team-high point total in the first half on 5-of-5 shooting from the field, while finishing the game with thee rebounds, two assists and two steals. All-conference guard Kelly Martin was the only other Skyhawk in double-figures with 10 points, while she flirted with a triple-double with seven assists and six rebounds.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first four points and seven of the first nine. Andrade scored the first two, Brown followed with a jumper and then Quijano drained a three-pointer.
After Andrade made a jumper with 1:25 left in the first quarter to give the Dolphins an 11-8 lead, the Skyhawks scored the final five points of the quarter to take the lead. Marshall buried a three-pointer 19 seconds after Andrade's basket and then Shannon Brown gave Stonehill the lead with a jumper with eight seconds left.
Following lay-ups by Marshall and Andrade to start the second quarter, the Skyhawks rattled off 12 straight points over 4:43 to take their largest lead of the game. Five players scored in the span, led by four points by Courtney Walsh.
Out of a timeout, the Dolphins responded with seven straight points to cut their deficit in half. Brown made a jumper and then Quijano buried a three-pointer and made a lay-up with 2:08 left.
Stonehill scored the last five points of the half to take a 32-20 lead into halftime. Marshall made a three-pointer and then Samantha Hyslip made two free throws with 26 seconds remaining.
The teams went back and forth in the third quarter with Stonehill's lead bouncing between 10 and 13 points and settling at 40-29 after 30 minutes of play.
After the Dolphins pulled within nine on two occasions in the opening three minutes of the fourth, Maty Diabate made a pair of shots in the paint to push Stonehill's lead back to 13, 47-34, with 5:23 to play.
The Dolphins responded with eight consecutive points to pull within five with 1:43 remaining. Andrade accounted for all eight points on two lay-ups, a jumper and two free throws.
Stonehill made 7-of-8 foul shots in the final 47 seconds to hold off the Dolphins.
Le Moyne finishes its season with a 13-14 record after making its third straight appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference Championships.
