WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOWNS SAINT ROSE IN DOUBLE OVERTIME, 76-70

Albany, N.Y. – Freshman guard Melanie Quijano (San Diego, Calif./Horizon Christian) scored eight points in the second overtime period to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 76-70 double-overtime victory over The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Quijano finished the game with a career-best 18 points, eight of which she scored in the first half, while adding three assists and three steals. Senior guard Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) registered her ninth double-double of the season – and second against the Golden Knights – with 19 points and 11 rebounds, including eight offensive, before fouling out in the second overtime period. Sophomore forward Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) tallied 11 points, four rebounds and four assists before fouling out in the first overtime, while senior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and sophomore forward Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) each recorded 10 points.

Karissa Birthwright led the Golden Knights with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds before picking up her fifth foul. Staci Barrett recorded 16 points and four rebounds, while Taylor Nazon registered 10 points and seven assists. Ashley Vanderwall came off the bench to score 13 points, including the game-tying three-pointer with 1.2 seconds left in regulation.

After the Dolphins jumped out to a 5-2 lead with 7:08 left in the first quarter, the Golden Knights rattled off 14 of the last 16 points of the quarter, including the final seven points over 1:15. Birthwright and Keyontae Williams each had four points in the span for Saint Rose.

Le Moyne dominated the scoring in the second quarter, tallying the first 12 points before the Golden Knights netted the final two points of the quarter. Brown scored six points around a three-pointer by Andrade and then Quijano buried a three-pointer with 2:44 left for a 19-16 lead.

Barrett pulled the Golden Knights within 19-18 at halftime with a lay-up with 1:49 left.

Saint Rose scored nine of the first 13 points of the third quarter to take a four-point lead. Barrett had the first five points and Birthwright followed with the last four.

The Dolphins answered with seven straight points to take the lead back midway through the quarter. Dobrovosky netted the first five points, including the first three-pointer of her career, and Webster followed with a lay-up for a 30-27 lead with 4:50 to go.

The teams then alternated points the remainder of the quarter as the teams went into the final period tied at 34.

After the game was tied at 36, 43, 45 and 47, Andrade gave the Dolphins the lead with a lay-up with 42 seconds left. Senior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) pushed the lead to three 18 seconds later with a free throw.

Following a lay-up by Birthwright with 18 seconds left and two free throws by Salzbrenner with 15 seconds remaining, the Golden Knights called timeout with 11 seconds to go. Vanderwall missed a three-pointer from the left corner with six seconds left, but the Golden Knights retained possession of the ball with three seconds left. Off the in-bounds pass, Vanderwall drilled a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key with 1.2 seconds left to tie the score at 52.

Brown gave the Dolphins the lead four seconds into the first overtime, but Saint Rose answered with three points over two possessions to take the lead. The Dolphins got baskets Andrade and Dobrovosky to take a 58-55 lead with 2:39 remaining.

Birthwright made a free throw 15 seconds later and Vanderwall followed with a lay-up with 1:58 left to even the score at 58, where it stayed the rest of the period as each team came up empty on four possessions.

Le Moyne scored the first three points of the second overtime to take the lead for good. After Birthwright made a lay-up with 3:23 left to get the Golden Knights within 63-61, the Dolphins tallied nine of the next 12 points to take the largest lead of the game, 72-64, with 54 seconds remaining. Quijano registered six of the points in the span.

Vanderwall answered with a pair of three-pointers around a Webster free throw to pull Saint Rose within 73-70 with 25 seconds left.

Junior guard Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) made two free throws and Webster made one over the last 20 seconds to close out the game's scoring.

Le Moyne (11-10, 8-7 NE-10), which has won eight of its 11 games since Christmas, is back on the road on Saturday at American International College at 1:30 p.m.
