Philadelphia, Pa. – Senior first baseman/pitcher
Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) homered to break a tie in the sixth inning and then registered a save to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 6-5 win over Philadelphia University on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at Alumni Field. The Rams picked up a 3-2 win in eight innings in the opening game of the day.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first in the nightcap with one run on three hits in the second inning. After senior catcher
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and sophomore left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) recorded back-to-back singles with two outs, freshman shortstop/pitcher
Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) knocked in West with a single to center.
The Rams took the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs on one hit and one Le Moyne error. Third baseman Andres Valbuena reached on a throwing error by the pitcher to open the inning and moved to second as catcher Matthew McGee was hit by a pitch. Following two outs, pitcher/designated hitter Fernando Garza doubled to right center to drive in Valbuena and McGee.
Freshman designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left center to tie the score at two.
Le Moyne regained the lead in the sixth with two runs on two hits. Following a two-out single to left by Place, Wright launched his second home run of the season over the fence in center field.
The Dolphins tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Gray drew a walk with one out and moved to second on an infield single by redshirt junior center fielder/right fielder
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant). Sophomore right fielder/first baseman
Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) followed with a single to center to drive in Gray and moved Martin to third. Martin then scored on a sacrifice bunt by senior second baseman
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker).
The insurance runs in the top of the inning were needed as Philadelphia scored three times in the bottom of the seventh on just one hit, but left the tying run at first. Second baseman/shortstop Christopher Lorenzo walked to open the inning and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher as left fielder/designated hitter Timothy Brodhag reached on a fielder's choice. Garza then doubled to left to drive in Lorenzo and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Following a walk by pinch-hitter Jeffery Briggs to load the bases, Brodhag scored as center fielder Michael Melendez reached on a fielder's choice and Briggs was retired at second. Garza then scored to make the score 6-5 as shortstop/catcher David McTaggart reached on a fielder's choice and Melendez was retired at second. Wright then induced a pop out to end the game.
Sophomore southpaw
Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) earned his first career victory after retiring three of the four batters he faced, including one via strikes. Wright retired three of the four batters he faced to record his first career save. Place tallied two of Le Moyne's seven hits in the contest. Jake Goldberg took the loss for the Rams after giving up four runs over three innings out of the bullpen.
In the opener, Philadelphia got on the scoreboard first with two runs on three hits in the second inning. McTaggart led off with a single to right center and then right fielder Dan Klusman doubled to left field. Following a pair of pop outs to second base, Lorenzo singled to drive in McTaggart. After a walk by Brodhag to load the bases, Klusman raced home on a wild pitch.
Le Moyne got one of the runs back in the third inning. Pittman led off with a single to right center and moved to second on a groundout. Two batters later, Cox lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Pittman.
The Dolphins tied the score at two in the sixth inning with one run on one hit. Charbonneau walked with one out and was awarded second base on a balk. Junior third baseman
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) followed with a single to center to drive in Charbonneau.
Philadelphia won the game in the bottom of the eighth with one run on one hit and a Le Moyne error. Garza led off with a single, stole second with one out and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Melendez then singled to left field to drive in Garza.
Gray suffered his first loss on the mound after yielding an unearned run and two hits over one and one-third innings in relief, while striking out two. Luke Floer earned the win out of the bullpen for the Rams after tossing a perfect eighth inning.
Le Moyne (10-8), which has split its last five doubleheaders with Philadelphia since sweeping the Rams in 2012, returns to Alumni Field on Sunday for another doubleheader with the Rams starting at 12:00 p.m.
