SOFTBALL TOPS SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT, 8-1, TO EARN SPLIT OF DOUBLEHEADER

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) registered a career-high four hits to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to an 8-1 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Owls defeated the Dolphins in the opener, 2-0.

The Dolphins scored the only runs they would need in the nightcap with two runs on three hits. Junior shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on a single to center by senior right fielder Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont). After a groundout moved Trotta to second, Riley doubled center to knock in Case and Trotta.

Le Moyne added two runs on three hits and one error in the third. Riley singled to right field with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third on a passed ball. Sophomore pitcher Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) then reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Riley to score. Junior catcher Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) followed with a single to left to plate Eastman.

Riley extended Le Moyne's lead to 5-0 in the fifth after smacking her second home run of the season and 11th of her career.

Southern Connecticut State got the run back in the top of the sixth on two hits. First baseman Lauren Yaffa led off with a double to right center, but was retired at third for the second out of the frame as center fielder Arianna Medeiros reached on a fielder's choice. Right fielder Brooke Franco then singled to center to knock in Medeiros.

The Dolphins tacked on three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman left fielder Lauren Floyd (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) opened the frame with a bunt single in front of the plate and then came around to score on a double to left by EJ. After an out, junior third baseman Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) drilled a two-run homer to center for her eighth homer of the year.

Eastman earned her 12th win in the circle after striking out six in the game, while yielding one run on four hits. In addition to Riley's four hits, Case and Trotta each had two hits. Audrey Dolloff suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits over five and one-third innings, while striking out six.

In the opening game, the teams were scoreless until the top of the seventh inning, when Southern Connecticut struck for two runs on three hits. Shortstop Jodi DiSanto singled to right field with one out and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Heather Jackson. After Yaffa was hit by a pitch, first baseman Victoria Ceballos singled to the shortstop to load the bases. Left fielder Arianne Tedeschi lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Jackson for the only run the Owls would need. Medeiros knocked in Yaffa for an insurance run with a single to left field.

Senior righty Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) suffered the loss after yielding the two runs and seven hits over seven innings. Kelsey Cockrill improved to 7-2 in her five-year career against the Dolphins by striking out nine over seven scoreless innings, while scattering four hits.

Le Moyne (22-13, 10-7 NE-10, 7-6 SW) concludes its series with the Owls on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
