SOFTBALL SWEEPS SAINT ROSE, 6-4, 9-1, TO CLINCH “UPSTATE CHALLENGE”

Albany, N.Y. – Senior left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a sweep of The College of Saint Rose on Monday afternoon at Cathy Haker Field. The Dolphins won the opening game, a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division contest, 6-4, and then defeated the Golden Knights, 9-1, in six innings in a non-conference matchup.

Saint Rose opened the scoring in the first game with one run on two hits in the fourth inning. Catcher Zoe Dubois led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a single to left field by right fielder Tina Karaqi. After a groundout, Dubois scored on a sacrifice fly to center by left fielder/designated player Katie Shevlin.

Le Moyne answered back in the next half inning with four runs on just one hit. Senior first baseman Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) drew a walk with one out and was replaced at first by junior pinch-runner Morgan Hope (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley). After Reynolds walked on four pitches, junior shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) singled up the middle to drive in Hope, while taking second on the throw home. Reynolds and Case then scored as senior right fielder Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) and junior third baseman Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) each reached on a fielder's choice. Junior center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) followed with a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Trotta.

The Golden Knights got one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of hits. Center fielder Meghan Reynolds led off with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a pair of foul outs. Shortstop Danielle Brusca then singled to the shortstop to knock in Reynolds.

The Dolphins pushed their lead back to three in the sixth with a pair of hits. Junior catcher Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) drew a walk to open the frame and was replaced at first by senior pinch-runner Meagan Malarkey (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott/Broome C.C.). After a single to right center by freshman designated player Madison DeRita (Higganum, Conn./Mercy) and a sacrifice bunt by Cawley, Reynolds singled to center to drive in Malarkey.

Le Moyne added a run on two hits in the top of the seventh. Riley singled to center with one out and came around to score on a double to right center by sophomore second baseman Tess Andrews (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee).

Saint Rose cut its final deficit in half with two runs on one hit in the bottom of the seventh. Left fielder Carly Wood reached on an error by the second baseman with one out and moved to second on a two-out walk by Brusca. Dubois then doubled to right center to knock in Wood and Brusca.

Senior righty Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) earned her 11th win of the season after striking out three over five innings, while yielding two runs on four hits. Sophomore righty Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) picked up her conference-best fourth save of the season after striking out two over the final two innings of the game, while yielding two unearned runs and one hit. Case and Reynolds each had two of Le Moyne's seven hits in the contest. Roma Mazzariello suffered the loss after giving up five runs on three hits over five innings.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings. In the first, Trotta blasted her second home run of the season over the fence in left field. In the second, Reynolds drew a two-out walk and came around to score on a double to left center by Case.

Saint Rose got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third with one run on one hit. Second baseman Alina Germinerio was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to second on groundout and came around to score on a double to right by first baseman Briana Bowen.

Le Moyne blew the game open with six runs on four hits and two Saint Rose errors in the fourth, all of which came with two outs. Sophomore catcher Nicole Cerrone (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) started the run with a double to left center and came around to score on a double to right center by Reynolds. Case then reached on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder, which allowed Reynolds to score. After Trotta singled to left and Mascari reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bases, Riley singled to left field to plate Case and Trotta. Following a walk by Andrews to load the bases again and a pitching change, Mascari and Riley scored as DeRita reached on a fielder's choice.

The Dolphins completed the game's scoring with one run on two hits and a Saint Rose error in the sixth. After Trotta and Mascari singled to open the frame, Riley reached on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Trotta to score.

Eastman struck out two over six innings to become the first pitcher in the conference to win 14 games, while yielding just one run on five hits. Trotta finished the game with three of her team's nine hits. Mazzariello allowed eight runs (three earned) on seven hits over three and two-thirds innings in the loss.

Le Moyne (25-13, 12-7 NE-10, 9-6 SW), which has won 25 games for the first time since the 2012 season, concludes its non-conference schedule on Wednesday against Mercyhurst University at 3:00 p.m.
