MEN’S TENNIS CLAIMS FIFTH SEED IN NE-10 CHAMPIONSHIP DESPITE 5-4 LOSS AT ASSUMPTION

Worcester, Mass. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 5-4 loss at Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Assumption College Tennis Courts.

Despite the loss, which dropped the Dolphins into a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference with Assumption and Stonehill College at 5-5, the Dolphins claimed the fifth seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championships by virtue of the conference's tiebreaking procedure. The Dolphins open NE-10 Championship play on Wednesday at fourth-seeded Bentley University at 2:00 p.m.

Assumption took a 3-2 lead in the match following the doubles competition. At the top spot, Chris Waung and Marco Leung edged junior James Gayvert (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and sophomore Hallam Doney (Andover, Hampshire/Peter Symonds), 8-6. Ryan Foster and Reb Mariano posted an 8-3 win at the second position over sophomore Jason Barton (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) and freshman Tyler Underwood (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa). Redshirt senior Stephane Legris (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury/Adirondack C.C.) and junior Benjamin Spoor (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) earned Le Moyne's first point of the day by defeating Tom Knight and Casey Hodor, 8-3, at the third spot.

The teams then split the singles competition, which allowed Assumption to capture the match. At first singles, Waung recorded back-to-back scores of 6-2 to defeat Gayvert. Foster posted consecutive scores of 6-3 at the second spot against Barton, while Knight did the same at the sixth spot against Underwood to clinch the match for the Greyhounds. Spoor earned Le Moyne's first point of singles play by sweeping Hodor, 6-0, 6-0, at the fifth spot. Doney then registered a 6-3, 6-0 win at the third position against Leung. Legris closed out the regular season with his third straight victory, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, at the fourth spot against Mariano.
